Portraits of Individuals offer the photographer a range of creative opportunities. Depending on the approach taken, the photographer can photograph an emotion or look, in a studio picture; can tell something about the individual in an environmental portrait through setting and props; can illustrate elements of the human condition through candids; can create work of fine art through photographic enhancement and embellishment; through construction, create an image of the individual to represent a side of themselves to the world that they or the photographer wish to display.
Portraits of individuals come in so many different forms. Some are taken tight on the face, others are headshots or head and shoulders, yet other are half, three quarter or full length. Various methodologies such as low and high key lighting effects can be utilised. It is the photographer that determines whether the picture is a success or not.

It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words. What an understatement, particularly with regard to the portrait. In it's simplest form a portrait is a likeness just as on a passport, it reveals nothing but the distinguishing features of a face. At a deeper level however a portrait can reveal much more. It can show emotion or tell us something about the life of a person, what they do, what they like, how they live and who or what they would like to be. Let's begin!
