BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! Let's just jump straight in it.
Trick #1-Gaining Trust as a New Player with Nothing to Offer Except Labor
Let's face it...starting out as a bum with nothing in this game can be frustrating. I worked for 3 weeks and really did not feel like I had gotten anywhere. Just when I thought I was ready to buy my certificate, I had to get more tools. Just when I was ready to get my first wagon...I needed more tools. I almost quit. Then I reached out to the alliance I was in. I got ridiculed. How do I know you won't just disappear with the tools I just gave you? Or sell them for a profit? Or use them to work for someone else? All of which will start your reputation in the wrong direction. So how do you get your foot in the door? You build that trust. But how?
The easiest way in the very beginning is to go into the open market sales section. Look for people who are selling tools with very little life left in them. They should be selling for much cheaper. Message those sellers and try to work out a deal with them. Be sure to follow through and stay in contact. Later you can use them for a reference. Even if you just give on that first job and receive NOTHING in return...a good reputation will take you far further at this point. The same owner will likely offer you a better job or to front you better tools. After a couple jobs he might offer you a wagon. If you make a deep commitment he may send you to university and buy you a certificate. I am amazed at how far reputation has gotten me. Now I am a valued part of a very good alliance. I truly consider some of them my friends even though I may never meet them in real life.
Tricks # 2 and #3-Make Your Wagons Last Longer
#2
If you are playing in the Wild West coffee is available. It makes you move twice as fast. So when you are using your wagon (or Cart) AND coffee, the wagon loses half as much life as it would have without coffee. When you add the price of the coffee to the mix it is close to break even...so how is this beneficial? The extra minutes gained to work. So if you save 5 hours of travel and you can work at 4 gold per minute...then you have gained 300x4=1200 additional gold minus taxes than if you were not using coffee.
Now that you are saving some wear on your wagons...how do we extend that even further? Let us say you have 2 characters going to the same location. Both have empty wagons. Make one of the characters carry the other character's wagon in his backpack. Once you get to your destination, give the wagon back to the other character. This also works if you are going to nearby lots...just make both characters stop at the closest lot first...give the wagon back...then have one of the characters move to the lot where he will be working.
These 2 tricks will more than double the lives of your wagons....and wagons already last a very long time.
Trick #4 and #5-Extend Your Storage for Super Cheap
For these tricks you will need someone who you can trust. That is just one of the reasons it is important to become part of an alliance.

One of the problems I have with my storage happens when I have a bunch of used tools. They do not stack on top of each other if their remaining life is different. Another problem is when I am mining resources far from where I can store them or from where I am delivering the resources. So how do I get around this? I take tools to a friends lot that is closer. I drop them off into the friends storage. Then the friend sells them back to me at 1 gold. Or I do the same thing with the owner of the lot where I am selling the resources I am collecting. Then they will just sit in his storage unit waiting for me to pick up whenever. Even if the lot gets sold or confiscated. Even if it takes me a year to comeback and get them. This trick works very well for tools but it also works well for resources...but it is a little more expensive...which brings us to the next trick.
#5
Let us say you have a lot and it has a bunch of stuff on it. Rent is due tomorrow and you just don't want to pay for the lot anymore. You have far too much stuff to move in a day and you obviously don't want to lose your stuff. Here's what you do. You sell it all to a trusted friend. Then it will sit in that storage forever until you move it. Your friend can either set a transport order or you can work out some other arrangement to get your resources without having to hurry. This will basically cost you 5% tax on each gold transacted. But can save significant amount on rent.
Perhaps the new owner of the lot could help you with the transfer as well. But there has to be some trust already or you are taking a big risk. Your friend would pick it up and put it in the new owner's storage...then the new owner could sell back to you for 1 gold. It could be done in small increments so as to reduce your risk with a stranger. Then it could stay there and you could pick it up whenever. This will cost you an additional 5% tax of each gold transacted.
Those last 2 tricks will give you cheap storage anywhere on the map you need once you are a part of a large community like an alliance. Once you have built some trust with more players. It will also help you to travel far less and perhaps save even more wear on your wagons.
Tip #6-Buying Resources and Central Storage
So we all know about the open market in game where we buy and sell all goods. But often the prices are to high/low for you to make a profit. But you are pretty sure you see a trend where the price of something will be going up...and you would like to make a higher profit than what the market is offering. For example: I am hoarding stone to sell. I could sell for 7G per KG right now to the highest buyer who happens to be at Central Storage. I want more. So I take it to central storage and put it up for sale at a higher price...say 10. It is amazing how many times I have sold at a much higher price this way. I also like to buy at a lower set price from central storage. I have a toolshed and market prices are just too high to build tools for a profit. So I purchase what I can through buy orders set at a price that WILL make me profit. I set this purchase order at both central storage and at the lot where I need the supplies. But most of my deals come from central storage. It is also good if you believe the price will rise to just drop stuff off at central storage and wait till the price does go up. Then you can often do an instant sell.
Tip #7-Always Communicate With Sellers Before You Buy
If I am planning on making a large purchase, I always reach out to the seller and ask for a better price. Sometimes there is a deal to be had...sometimes not. Sometimes it will result in a big savings...sometimes the seller will offer free transport. But you cannot get a better price if you don't ask. Try to get a response before you start collecting. Sometimes buyers will lower their price while you are collecting and it really sucks. Sometimes they will take their order down altogether and you must find a new buyer. Once I had to sell for half of what I thought I would get because the high order was taken down and I had to travel so far to get to another buyer and it was more economical to sell for less close by. Now I try to confirm a purchase BEFORE I start collecting. 8 of 10 times I can confirm. Everyone has always stuck to the deal so far. Sometimes they will change or remove the order for you to fill. The possibilities are endless. And every good deal you follow through on will help build your reputation.
Tip #8-Always Communicate With People You are Doing Jobs For
This is important for any job you do. Some owners will communicate back. Some will not. The ones that do are more likely to make win win deals and help you advance you game faster. It is especially important if you are collecting resources and selling to the highest buyer.
Tip #9-Make Trades Whenever You Can
Each time a purchase is made taxes are taken out. And often someone else has something you want and they want what you have. Make a trade...get a better deal...pay little or no taxes depending on how you transfer the goods to each other. So you go into the open market sell section and look for someone selling what you need and make a note of the reasonable sellers. Then you go to the buy section and see if any of those sellers are looking to buy what you are trying to sell...any matches? If there are then strike up a deal.
Tip #10-Check the Land Auction BEFORE You Build From Scratch
Many new players jump in the game and want to start running a business before they have gotten a feel for the economy. It could work out but I generally advise against that. Figure out what is going on first. Try to figure out who is buying what. Reach out to other shop owners to ask what is moving. Make a plan and some goals. Look for a good trade partner to help you achieve your goals. Then figure out what business you want to run. So now that you know what you want to run...don't just go out and start building. Often you can just purchase a shop that is already built and perhaps has the rent paid up for a good period of time. Many deals are to be found on the auction or Land Registry as it is known as in game. That is where I got my shops. Just be sure to check the location of the shop you are bidding on. Check when rent is due. Check if the building is level 1 or level 2. Check the condition of the building. Check the value of the items in storage. Check to make sure the supplies you need for the shop are available nearby...you don't want to buy a sawmill if you cannot get wood.
Ok then...That should save everyone some gold. Put it to good use and I will see you in prospectors lands.
