Kin Coin (KIN) is a cryptocurrency made by the Canadian Social Media Company, Kik, in 2017. It is a decentralized blockchain platform that allows content creators and consumers to transact directly instead of relying on advertising revenue to monetize content.

Kik is a social media application that is similar to WhatsApp which allows users to chat, send pictures and videos, and play games. Kik already has a pretty huge userbase with over 15 million users reported to use the platform. The majority of these users are aged between 13 to 22 years old but the demographic is always aging. The benefit that Kik has over its competition is the fact that it is pretty anonymous. You are not required to verify your identity or provide a phone number as verification. Instead any name can be used with an email to secure an account. This anonymity has been praised whilst rival social media companies take advantage of user data to sell to 3rd part advertisers, we only need to look at the Facebook Cambridge Analytica scandal for evidence of this.

The Kin coin will allow all users on the application to pay their favorite content creators and developers directly. Users will be able to support their favorite content creators ranging from written content, art, video games, chatbots and digital collectibles. The token was launched after Kik had raised over $98 million during their 2017 ICO which had been distributed to over 10,000 people. The Kin coin now exists on both the Ethereum blockchain as an ERC-20 token and on the Stellar blockchain. This is to address scalability issues and both tokens are interchangeable and can be transferred via atomic swaps.
