Joseph Lubin is the co-founder of Ethereum and the founder of Ethereum software development company ConsenSys. Born and raised in Canada, Lubin has extensive experience as a software engineer and management executive, having worked in AI related field in the early 1990s, before becoming the Vice President of Technology for the private wealth management division at Goldman Sachs. Following this, Lubin was the CEO of SyNerG Music.
Lubin is a highly respected individual in the cryptocurrency community and his words, which include thoughts on the direction of the market and the technology, often make headlines. As an insider who has been in the space since its earliest days, Lubin is a regular presence on panel discussions and conferences.
Speaking at the Deconomy conference in Seoul earlier this year, where he was joined by blockchain and cryptocurrency stalwarts Andreas Antonopoulos, Vitalik Buterin and Changpeng Zhao, Lubin made the case for Ethereum becoming a global decentralized settlement layer, a point he has made consistently in remarks. Lubin also believes that Ethereum is poised to grow by a factor of 1000 in the years to come, and showed confidence in the upcoming implementation of the Proof-of-Stake consensus protocol via the Casper upgrade, slated for sometime in 2020 and 2021. Both Casper and sharding are expected to take Ethereum into its next phase, dubbed “Ethereum 2.0”, in which scalability and performance issues will have been overcome.
ConSensys itself is a major entity in the space, pioneering development in decentralized applications, infrastructure and standards in the space. In addition to building decentralized applications, ConsenSys’ efforts includes developing enterprise solutions and developer tools, and incubating and facilitating joint ventures. Collectively, the efforts of ConsenSys could be described as building the foundation and infrastructure for “Web 3.0”, a term used to describe the next generation of the internet, one that is decentralized.
