NFL: Brian Flores And The NFL Lawsuit

By InfinitePrime3k | Sports4life | 4 Feb 2022

Brian Flores is the recent ex-coach of the Miami Dolphins and prior to that was a defensive coach for the New England Patriots.  Now, he's filed a class action discrimination lawsuit against the NFL and three teams consisting of the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins and New York Giants.  Flores who's Miami Dolphins started off slow this season but finished strong and showed a lot of growth under the 2nd year head coach.  I'm sure I wasn't the only one caught off guard when he was let go by the Dolphins at the end of this season.  Flores said they tried to pay him to tank the season and the two teams only brought him in to meet the "Rooney Rule" which requires teams to interview black head coaches during the hiring process.  I've always felt that the rule was a slippery slope because it makes it more of a quota to meet rather than actually giving black coaches a realistic chance at the job based on their qualifications.  There's clearly been a problem with hiring black head coaches in the NFL.  The league is over 100 years old and in that time only 18 of it's head coaches have been black.  Not many black head coaches get a second chance to be a head coach after being fired by a team either.  Lovie Smith was fired after years of success with a Super Bowl appearance, a top defense for many years, and even going 10-6, but still was fired.  Jim Caldwell took the Lions to the playoffs twice in his 3 years with Detroit and somehow, someway he too was fired.  Neither of their names have come up in head coaching searches over the years since they were fired either.  Even looking now at guys like Eric Bieniemy OC for the KC Chiefs, Byron Leftwitch, and Raheem Morris just to name a few, there's been very few mentions despite them being very well qualified and proven coaches in the league.  Flores is making the right move here in challenging the league on this one because it's bigger than money.  Yeah, there are many people that would've taken 100k per game lost to tank the season and get a higher draft pick, but Flores was hired to do a job and that's coach winning football on the field.  That speaks of integrity, honesty, and respect for not only himself, but also for the players that put in all that preparation in order to win games and have successful careers in the league.  Could you see yourself throwing games by calling the wrong plays purposely which contributes to making players on the field look bad and possibly not able to feed their families?  While at the same time knowing that a losing record will ultimately get you fired as the scapegoat for a losing team, but ownership get's to walk away with a high draft pick that may not work out anyway.  Meanwhile and especially as a black coach in the league there's a high chance you won't get many if any looks for another head coaching position because your leadership will be questioned and scrutinized anytime your name is mentioned.  Not Brian Flores though and I applaud him for standing up for what's right in this ongoing issue in the league.  32 teams and 1 black head coach is definitely something to question and I know they have a right to hire who they want to hire, but this is ridiculous to see great black coaches only get a look because of a rule and rarely because they are actually great coaches.  I personally don't see a fix in this issue because this problem starts at the very top so unless there's penalties up to the point of an owner being removed, then it will continue to be an issue going forward.  Hopefully Flores will still get a chance elsewhere to become a head coach again, but the chances are that he'll be shut out of the league in the same fashion that Kaepernick was shut out for speaking out.
