Baker Mayfield was traded to the Carolina Panthers answering the lingering question in the sports world of where Baker would end up and if traded at all. I'll admit it was a little bit surprising, but at the same time it was one of teams I figured would be most likely to make a trade for Baker. The reason being is that the Panthers seem like they didn't have a plan for life after Cam Newton (for the record, Cam Newton should retired a Panther) which makes it an even more questionable move at the time for me, but nevertheless they made it and have struggled the last couple seasons choosing and sticking by a franchise QB. They may have found a new footing in Baker Mayfield with today's trade. The reason I say that is because since coming into the league Baker has had the experience of growing his craft in a really competitive division where the playoffs aren't guaranteed to any one team at any given time. If you're not familiar with the division then here's the teams: Steelers, Ravens, Bengals, Browns. That division alone has been one of the most competitive for years so it's no easy feat making the playoffs without starting by getting through your divisional opponents so he definitely deserves credit for leading the Browns to the playoffs considering the recent struggles the team has had over the years. That's not to say that he'll have a cakewalk in the NFC South, but experience could payoff in the longrun if the Panthers make sure he has the tools he needs to mesh with his skill set instead of the best tools available on the market because it just doesn't work that way for every QB. As great as Tom Brady is, it didn't work that way for him when he first arrived in Tampa Bay. Didn't work that way for Manning in Denver, and even the Rams with Stafford had to make adjustments from the get go. That's not a comparison of Baker to any of the aforementioned, but simply a comparison of having the right tools vs the best tools for your QB and that will be an entirely different post for a breakdown on that. I really do think that Baker has an opportunity here to use all that has helped him grow as QB to his advantage as long as he doesn't set out to prove a point to anyone but himself as the starting QB in Carolina. He definitely is a starting QB in this league still and let's not forget that he played a part in turning around the Cleveland Browns and making them a part of the division winner conversation for the first time in many years. At the same time you can't blame the Browns for jumping on the opportunity to get a QB like Deshaun Watson minus the off the field issues that have yet to be resolved. It just so happens that Watson chose the Browns and we pretty know the rest of the story to this point. However what remains to be seen is how Baker, who I'm predicting will be the Week 1 starter for Carolina will fair under the pressure of maintaining his composure while the spotlight will be on him more often than not this coming season. I wish him the best in his new journey and truly believe he's a high quality QB that can be a difference maker for the better of the Carolina Panthers.
