Ego

Overcoming Egoic States of Consciousness (Part 2)

We must develop a rigorous understanding of Ego and one’s True Self who, deep down inside is naturally blessed with the ability of looking after his/her own nature. The Trappist contemplative and writer, Thomas Merton describes the ego as our “spiritual shadow”.   We must obtain a true understanding of our own egos.

But, ego is merely a tool for us to cope with the physical realm of living - always on the lookout for breaches in security. The ego feels that through negativity it can manipulate reality and get what it wants. It believes it can attract a desirable condition and dissolve an undesirable one.

An easy experiment can be applied over a very short period of time (weeks-months). Simply step back and take a passive role by pausing to observe our feelings and behaviour. By shifting our consciousness, we’re able to look at our feelings and emotions in a non-judgemental way. Merely by observing one’s own self, feelings, emotions, we have arrived at a deeper level of consciousness.

However, we must remember that are not our thoughts. We are not our minds. Our minds are a tool to be trained and honed to benefit our lives. As difficult as it may be for us to do so in a modern tech dependant instantly gratified world, we must never let ourselves identify with our mind or ego.

“Send only thought currents of good, constructive, harmonizing, upbuilding, healing character over your nervous system so that there will be no obstruction to the free flowing energies of the Holy Spirit.”

Myrtle FIllmore - Unity School

With practice and prayer more will be revealed.

In order to transcend our egoic states and grow spiritually, it is imperative that we develop discipline. We must sacrifice and suffer the consequences of cause and effect. is a matter of discipline and self observation however, in a non-judgemental way.  Self loathing is blasphemy and harmful to the spirit.

Do not feed the ego lest it develop momentum and snowball out of control. If someone tosses you a hot potato. You know by instinct to immediately drop it. The ego is conditioning us for security’s sake, but it is also very easy to identify one’s entire self with Ego.

The mind has the ability to create and recall negative imagery very quickly and kick into overdrive ! Self - Protection Security Apps engaged!

 instinct gone awry.

With diligence and discipline we can acquire the ability and the tools to ‘dip back into our consciousness’ and to correct certain defects  of character. As we mature spiritually and intuitively, we no longer need the tools we used when we were younger. Sooner or later these “Apps” must be uninstalled - cut out at the root.

We need a different kind of protection than we did when we were teen-agers. We need to delete apps that are no longer useful to us.

Let’s realign our lives / Install new-updated apps!  Once we take on the part of an observer of the true/false self; momentarily, we’re cleansed old states of consciousness and able to begin our process of self-analysis.

Now we’re free continue the experiment by mentally dissecting our own personality.
