NVIDIA and Blockchain: The GPU Firm Has Moved Into Crypto Mining

Graphics card giant NVIDIA is currently among the 25 largest stocks. Long considered a crypto-adjacent company, the firm has now officially acknowledged the potential of cryptocurrency mining.

Manufacturing: NVIDIA has announced a line of GPU chips designed specifically for crypto mining. The new line of "Cryptocurrency Mining Processors" will be distinct from its line of GeForce cards for gaming.

Investments: Nvidia began to support a blockchain startup, Ubex, in its incubation program in 2018. Ubex uses AI and blockchain in advertising.

Crypto controversies: Nvidia was sued in 2020 for allegedly misrepresenting and downplaying the extent to which its gaming revenue relied on crypto miners. This affected Nvidia investors, but had little effect on the cryptocurrency mining community.

Executive sentiment: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huan is very positive toward crypto. He told CNBC in 2018 that blockchain is "here to stay," calling it a "fundamental new form of computing." He concluded that crypto "gave [the market] that extra bit of juice that caused all of our GPUs to be in such great demand."

Enterprise blockchain: Nvidia has been granted at least one blockchain patent in 2021. The patent describes a blockchain used for data and record management; it is not an actual product.

Retail support: Nvidia does not accept cryptocurrency or Bitcoin as a form of payment, nor does it have any apparent plans to do so.

Summary: Nvidia explicitly acknowledged blockchain in its product line for the first time in 2021. It is likely that it will continue to capitalize on crypto.
