Harold Thomas Finney II (May 4, 1956 – August 28, 2014) was an American software developer. An active user in the Cypherpunk community, Finney came to control two anonymous remailers.

In 1979 Finney earned an engineering degree from the CalTech Institute.
Finney believed strongly in cryptography, which led him to handle two anonymous remailers in the 90s. In 2004 Finney created the first Proof Of Work system, even before Bitcoin. Later, in January 2009, he would be the first person to receive a transaction on the Bitcoin network.
Hal was heavily involved in the early stages of Bitcoin's development, constantly exchanging e-mails with Satoshi Nakamoto regarding the development and improvements of the Bitcoin network.
In October 2009, Hal announced that he suffered from ALS disease, despite this he did not stop collaborating in improving Bitcoin, in 2014 he died and immediately his body was cryogenized by the company Alcor.
