Virtual Afterlife: Cemeteries in Metaverse

Virtual Afterlife: Cemeteries in Metaverse

By SimpleSwap | SimpleSwap Blog | 26 Oct 2022

Finally, it’s THAT time of the year! Halloween is almost here and we’re all waiting for it to come. Don’t you like to read, watch or discuss some spooky stories, in order to create the mood? We really do! And the most popular scary tales usually include cemeteries. With stories like these, you can easily scare your friends at the Halloween parties. In honor of the spirit of the holliday in this article we’ll talk about a virtual afterlife.

The one and only cemetery for gamers

It’s hard to believe but the famous browser Opera GX successfully launched the first world’s virtual graveyard in November 2021. It’s dedicated to gamers who have stopped playing for various reasons. There you can give your avatar a nice funeral and show your respect.

“Fact is that if you die in the Metaverse, you luckily don't die in real life. But people do miss you. The online graveyard is a subtle tool for people to tell their friends who went missing on Discord or in a game that they miss them,” said Maciej Kochemba, the head of Opera GX.

This virtual cemetery is made in 2D and 8-bit style. The process of burying game avatars is pretty easy. You are able to choose the type of the tombstone, engrave gamers' nicknames on it  and even write an eulogy. Plus, there’s an opportunity to add the date of death.

“Your virtual identity is a part of the Metaverse: it’s an extension of your physical life. When your gaming lifestyle suffers, it needs a place to be buried and a virtual graveyard is a great place to do it”, added Kochemba.

The population of the gamers graveyard has now reached 57,417 – that’s a lot of graves, so for our convenience developers created a search feature. On the main page you can enter the name of the avatar and find the needed tomb.

So if your friends once were a fan of P2E games but now they have stopped playing, you can create a grave for their avatars. And you can send a link to the "grave" to them, as a creative gift for Halloween. Plus, perhaps this will make them return to the gaming world, who knows.

Remember Metaverse

In web 3.0 a unique project exists, it is called Remember Metaverse. It gives us the opportunity to create NFT Memorial Stones to honor the memory of those who passed away in Metaverse. This unusual project has been launched in the beginning of 2022. In this virtual graveyard users can pay their respect by creating memorial stones and even digital flowers.

NFT Memorial Stones are working on the Ethereum blockchain. Developers created 5000 stones and they were trying to make every NFT a unique masterpiece. Therefore now we have a new way to remember the dead with beautiful pieces of virtual art.

How does it work? First users have to mint NFTs, and afterwards they can choose a perfect place for it somewhere in the Remember Metaverse. Moreover, owners of the NFT have access to a Memory Hall. It’s a virtual space where they can keep personal memories about their loved ones. It could be anything from texts to videos. Also, users have the opportunity to decide who can see and share these memories.

The public sale of NFT memorial stones is already open. The floor price for these NFTs is 0.04 ETH on OpenSea.

Conclusion
