Exploring Illuvium - A Blockchain-Based Fantasy RPG

Exploring Illuvium - A Blockchain-Based Fantasy RPG

For years, blockchain gaming has failed to deliver a truly AAA-quality title that appeals to mainstream gamers. Axie Infinity brought crypto gaming into the spotlight, but its cutesy 2D graphics still cater more to insider crypto enthusiasts or speculators. Metaverse games have fallen short, lacking gameplay, players, or a reason for being. Card games like Splinterlands and Gods Unchained have met some success, but are still card games. It has gotten to the point that most in the community doubt any new projects, ignore the hype, and look at their launches with skepticism.

Illuvium has entered the market in this contentious period, bringing plans to change perception by merging stunning 3D fantasy visuals with the ownership and incentives of NFTs. Going beyond a single system, they seek to provide ownership that spans multiple games, allowing the NFTs earned or purchased in one playspace to be interoperable with another. This ambitious project aims to push blockchain gaming into the big leagues.

Illuvium

Illuvium seeks to provide entertainment to both casual gamers and hardcore DeFi fans. Set in a sprawling 3D open world, players battle creatures called Illuvials, collecting and nurturing them along the way. With classes, elemental affinities, 100+ unique creatures, and ever-escalating capabilities, Illuvials create the deep strategic gameplay one might expect of these types of games. If it seems underwhelming at first, the idea is not merely this, but what comes after, as additional games will build out the use case and offer greater opportunities. Their varying scarcity also makes them tradable NFT assets with real value on open markets, though that is always tied to demand, which faces a downward pressure given the current market and appeal of NFTs.

Blending immersive exploration and combat with crypto game theory, Illuvium wants to create an interoperable ecosystem where assets are usable across interconnected games. Now, this is what sets it apart. Three main titles form a central trinity, including the core Illuvium Overworld RPG, the web-based Illuvium Zero builder game, and the auto-battler card game Illuvium Arena. Where other blockchain games have made vague promises of building out their systems with additional games, Illuvium has delivered. That is the difference.

Illuvium runs on Ethereum but uses Immutable X as a scaling solution for gas-free transactions. The game features staking rewards for its ILV governance token and a protocol-owned liquidity system funded by revenues. A unique twist is sILV – staking rewards locked for a year, or redeemable early for in-game assets only. This allows for savvy users to actually earn significant returns by making smart purchases on the markets, but requires greater attention to detail.

With over 40 team members, including veteran AAA game developers, Illuvium is a real company that is releasing content and making improvements. Their patch log shows they are listening to user feedback and are making bug fixes and quality of life improvements. But until games ship, exiting betas, skepticism exists on whether they can fulfill their lofty promises. The long development timeline also faces pressure from rivals like The Sandbox. Or, maybe not. However, if Illuvium can deliver, it may finally be the blockchain game that brings the technology into the mainstream. Its push to make blockchain elements more seamless also broadens its appeal.

As I see it, everything boils down to playerbase. There are a lot of terrible games with thousands of players, and excellent games which are DOA. Marketing to people, keeping them engaged, and encouraging them to pay money is what makes or breaks these projects. Often, that relies on how the team handles problems and community building, balancing new player acquisition while respecting veteran players and whales.

Illuvium likely won’t dethrone the incumbents overnight, and is significantly off its ATH. But by targeting hardcore gamers first rather than just crypto die-hards, Illuvium is poised to offer something the competition does not. The project shows immense potential to pioneer a new era of immersive, interoperable worlds with true crossover appeal, and in a way that is very different from metaverse rivals, or game building experiences like Roblox.

So, let's get to key ideas of what you need to know.

These are not Pokemon!

Overview

Illuvium aims to blend together decentralized finance and crypto collectibles with an AAA-quality auto-battler RPG game, and other gameplay experiences. Players collect creatures called Illuvials which can be owned as ERC-721 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain and used in gameplay across different game systems. The game worlds features rich lore and graphics brought to life by veteran game developers, and show a bit more polish that Splinterlands or Gods Unchained.

Technology Stack

Illuvium is built on the Ethereum blockchain and will leverage layer-2 scaling solutions like Immutable X for faster transactions. The native token is ILV which is used for governance, staking, and rewards. Non-fungible Illuvial creatures are represented as ERC-721 tokens. Ultimately, this means they are exposed to high gas fees, which will burden their token at certain times during surges, but can be avoided to some degree.

Tokenomics

There is a fixed supply of 10 million ILV tokens. The public token distribution rounds raised over $18 million by early 2022. Tokens are released on a vesting schedule to players, node operators, liquidity rewards, and the team/advisors. It is fairly bog standard, and there is not much else to say. However, it does get a bit murky when you consider the staked Illuvium (sILV), as it is harder to track this number exactly to help model the market cap and demands.

Products and Ecosystem

While still in beta, the Illuvium game will feature auto-battler PvE and PvP gameplay in an expansive open world as players fight, capture, and evolve Illuvials. The team has released conceptual previews and NFTs but the game is still under development. It looks polished, but without adequate reviews of gameplay it is hard to judge the beta. Still, I appreciate any team that takes its time to deliver a working product rather than rushing to publish a buggy cashgrab.

Roadmap and Developments

Illuvium completed a seed round in early 2021 followed by a public presale, IDO, and listing on exchanges in 2021-2022. The beta version of the game was planned for late 2022 along with the first Immutable X integration. Limited gameplay has been made available, but it is not publicly released as of writing.

Team and Community

Illuvium was founded by game industry veterans Kieran and Aaron Warwick. The team has since expanded to include 40+ employees and advisors with experience across blockchain, gaming, and visual arts. It is a small team for an ambitious project, but includes actual talent instead of managers. It also seems to benefit form a clear vision and art direction.

Investors and Partnerships

Illuvium has received funding from prominent blockchain investors such as Craft Ventures, Dragonfly Capital, and Hypersphere Ventures. Key partnerships include Immutable X and Curve. This alone suggest Illuvium should be taken seriously within in the space, and should be included as part of a balanced portfolio if one invests in NFT game projects.

Token Price History and Performance

The ILV token opened at around $40 and spiked briefly over $1,000 during the 2021 bull market, reaching as high as $1,800 according to some exchanges. It has since dropped significantly and is currently trading at approximately $94.50. Market cap is roughly $357 million. Their price has been stable for a long period, and considering the recent positive trends in the market and their approach of a full release, it is possible for the price to increase in the mid-term.

Strengths and Advantages

Illuvium combines stunning 3D visuals built by AAA game developers with the ownership and scarcity afforded by blockchain NFTs. This gives it massive mainstream appeal and growth potential. It handles many of the critiques similar projects face, and seems both responsive and cautious, showing a proper level of leadership and communication on the part of their team.

Limitations and Challenges

As another NFT project, Illuvium still faces risks associated with unproven game mechanics and token economics during a moment where the markets are turning against NFTs. As with any unreleased game, the final product may not live up to expectations. At the same time, AAA studious are getting closer to providing their own NFTs which will potentially take a major part of the marketshare. Every day that passes without release makes it harder to overcome the obstacles inherent in the market.

Competitor Analysis

Illuvium competes with blockchain games like Axie Infinity, Splinterlands, Gods Unchained, TheSandbox, and others, but aims to offer more advanced graphics and gameplay. Most NFT games still remain fairly basic. At the same time, Roblox, which offers a game experience not entirely dissimilar to their core vision is a major player in the space, with deep pockets.

Future Outlook and Forecasts

If the team delivers on its gameplay promises, Illuvium could become one of the biggest breakout crypto game hits and drive adoption of blockchain gaming. But the game's eventual success is still contingent on execution. Like I have said, it is about player retention, about getting those players and getting them to pay. If they can handle that, they are golden. But it is a big if.

Now, I will say this again. They are way off their ATH. They are close to a major release. And the market is showing signs of positivity which could affect altcoins and related blockchain projects. It is not hard to imagine that they are currently undervalued, and that the price might increase. Whether it does or not, or whether it is a better or worse investment that others, I cannot say. But it seems interesting.

My Final Thoughts

In summary, Illuvium ambitiously aims to push blockchain game design forward. Its conceptual vision as the “first AAA decentralized RPG” is promising but remains largely untested. However, by attracting top-tier game talent, Illuvium has strong potential to lead innovation in immersive crypto-powered gaming worlds. We've heard it before. We will probably hear it again. But they do seem closest to delivering on their promise.
