#70 🔸 The inner mirror: how to truly know yourself

By luciman | SelfInvest | 15 Oct 2025

Have you ever felt like you were living on autopilot? Making choices, reacting to situations, moving forward without really asking yourself, “Why am I doing this? Who am I, really?”

Self-awareness is the foundation of any personal growth. Without it, we build our lives on sand—based on others’ expectations, hidden fears, or patterns we’ve adopted without questioning. Psychology shows that people who practise conscious introspection make decisions more aligned with their values, have healthier relationships, and enjoy greater well-being.

Why is it so hard to know ourselves?

The paradox is that we are our own constant witnesses, yet sometimes we understand ourselves the least. The mind has defence mechanisms: we deny what we don’t want to see, rationalise what we cannot accept, or cling to labels others have placed on us (“you’re shy,” “you’re strong,” “you’re not good enough”).

I’ve met people who, well into adulthood, realised that their career choice was dictated more by the desire to please a parent than by their inner calling. And perhaps you too have felt, at some point, that discrepancy between what you do and who you truly are.

How can we get closer to our authentic self?

  1. Reflective writing (journaling)
Research shows that writing about our emotions and experiences brings greater clarity. You don’t need perfect sentences. Simple prompts such as “What did I feel today and why?” or “What part of me have I been ignoring lately?” can open unexpected inner doors.

  2. Feedback from relationships
Other people are also our mirror. Sometimes, the way they react to us reveals something we don’t want to admit. But it’s important to filter this feedback: not everything others say about us is true, only what resonates with our authentic experience.

  3. Confronting the personal shadows
Carl Jung spoke of the “shadow”—those parts of ourselves we hide or deny, such as anger, envy, or the need for control. If we have the courage to face them, they can become sources of growth rather than obstacles.

  4. New experiences as tools of discovery
Paradoxically, we don’t just discover ourselves through introspection but also through action. A shy person who dares to speak in public discovers courage. Someone stuck in routine who travels alone discovers independence.

A personal experience and a lesson I heard

I once realised that many of my decisions were driven more by the fear of making mistakes than by the desire to grow. When I acknowledged this mechanism, I began to make more conscious choices. At the same time, I heard a simple yet powerful reflection from someone: “You cannot hide from yourself. Either you meet yourself consciously, or you meet yourself through crises.”

Conclusion

Self-awareness is not a final goal but a continuous process. You never reach the point where you can say, “Now I know everything about myself,” because you are always changing. But the more sincerely and deeply you look at yourself, the more authentically and freely you live.

Challenge for you: take 10 minutes today and write down the answer to this question: “What part of myself am I avoiding looking at right now?”
