#52 🔸 Between discipline and self-compassion: the balance that sustains growth

By luciman | SelfInvest | 24 Sep 2025

After discussing discipline as a source of freedom, it’s time to explore an area that is often overlooked: self-compassion.
Because no matter how much discipline helps us, if we don’t learn to be gentle with ourselves, we risk turning life into an endless race for perfection.

Why are we harsher on ourselves than on others?

Have you noticed that you’re often more forgiving with a friend who makes a mistake than with yourself?
Psychology explains this through the self-critical bias – the tendency to judge ourselves more harshly because we are emotionally invested and believe that high standards will protect us from failure.

But the truth is different: excessive self-criticism does not prevent failure, it fuels anxiety and weakens motivation.

What does self-compassion really mean?

It is not the same as laziness, “forgiving yourself” for everything, or avoiding responsibility.
According to positive psychology, self-compassion has three dimensions:

  1. Self-kindness – speaking to yourself with gentleness during difficult times.

  2. Common humanity – remembering that you are not the only one who makes mistakes, that imperfection is universal.

  3. Mindfulness – noticing negative emotions without exaggerating them and without denying them.

A real-life example

I once heard someone share how, after failing an important exam, they told themselves: “I’m a complete failure, I’ll never succeed.” Yet, looking from the outside, it was obvious that what they needed was not more self-criticism, but encouragement and a better strategy for the next time.

That’s the difference: how we choose to speak to ourselves when we stumble.

How discipline connects with self-compassion

It may sound paradoxical, but discipline and self-compassion are not opposites – they are complementary.
Discipline gives us direction. Self-compassion protects us from burnout.

  • Without discipline, we remain trapped in chaos and procrastination.

  • Without self-compassion, discipline becomes a crushing burden.

It’s like trying to run a marathon without water breaks. Yes, you may reach the finish line, but at what cost?

The psychological lesson

Studies show that people who practise self-compassion are more resilient and recover faster from setbacks.
Why? Because they treat mistakes as information, not as proof of their inadequacy.

When you combine discipline with kindness towards yourself, you create fertile ground for authentic growth. You no longer live in extremes – between chaos and rigidity – but instead find a healthy balance.

How to practise self-compassion without slipping into complacency

  1. Change your inner dialogue – ask yourself: “How would I speak to a friend in this situation?”.

  2. Accept imperfection as part of the process – not as proof of weakness.

  3. Practise mindful pauses – take a few minutes to breathe and reflect when you feel overwhelmed.

  4. Use discipline as a compass, not a whip – see your personal rules as guidance, not punishment.

A challenge for you

Think of a recent moment when you were extremely critical of yourself.
Now rewrite that scene in your mind, but this time speak to yourself as you would to a dear friend. Notice how the energy changes.
