#48 🔸 How to be more present in your own life

By luciman | SelfInvest | 19 Sep 2025

Have you ever gone through an entire day and felt as if you hadn’t truly lived it? You went about your tasks on autopilot, ticking boxes, but in the evening, when you lay your head on the pillow, it felt like time had simply slipped away. This is one of the great challenges of today’s world: it’s difficult to be truly present.

Psychologists call this phenomenon “mind-wandering” – the drifting of the mind. It’s not necessarily bad, but when it becomes a way of life, it steals our connection with the present. Instead of living the moment, we remain caught between the past and the future.

The present as a safe space

Often, we retreat into memories or worries to avoid what we feel in the moment. It might be discomfort, anxiety, or simply fatigue. But the present, even when it’s not always pleasant, is essential: it’s the only place where real change can happen. We cannot alter the past, and the future remains merely a projection.

A simple example: I heard from someone that during a short walk in the park, they realised their mind was completely caught up in thoughts about a meeting the next day. Even though they were in a peaceful place, with warm sunlight and green trees around, they weren’t truly present there. This happens often – the body is in one place, but the mind wanders elsewhere.

What does being present actually mean?

We’re not just talking about mindfulness techniques or meditation – although they can be helpful. Being present means bringing your attention to where you are and accepting what you’re experiencing without excessive judgment.

You can start with very simple things:

  • Notice the real taste of your food, without scrolling on your phone.

  • Listen to someone fully, without thinking ahead about your response.

  • Feel the texture of water as you wash your face in the morning.

These may seem like minor details, but they anchor both body and mind in the same place.

Presence and relationship psychology

Research shows that people who cultivate presence in their lives have deeper and more stable relationships. Why? Because when you are truly present, you offer something invaluable: your attention. This creates trust and connection.

How often do we feel ignored because the other person was physically there but mentally absent? Phones, worries, thoughts – all become invisible barriers between us. In contrast, even a single minute of genuine listening is worth more than an hour of absent presence.

How to make space for the present in your life

  1. Breathe consciously – several times a day, take 30 seconds to notice your breath. It’s the simplest anchor to the present.

  2. Reduce stimuli – sometimes too much noise (notifications, news, unnecessary conversations) fragments your attention. Remove what isn’t necessary.

  3. Be gentle with yourself – you can’t be present all the time. Your mind will wander, and that’s normal. The key is to bring it back without self-criticism.

An invitation

The present is often underestimated. We see it as a passage between what was and what will be. But the truth is, life itself is here.

I invite you to ask yourself a simple question: how present have I been today in my own life? And if the answer doesn’t satisfy you, try again tomorrow. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain: your own life, truly lived.
