Follow up : ALGORAND scam update.

Yesterday I posted an article about an Algorand scam, that was being pulled off in real time. A YouTube channel named Algorand 3 first shared a live stream selling the old RuneScape style "send us this much, we will send you double back" flex.

Even with the blatant grammatical errors, the strategically placed screenshot of Algorand's Founder, Silvio Micali, and the falsified viewers by means of utilising bots that prop the viewers up, to have unsuspecting viewers feel like they really have found the next crypto goldmine, was clearly enough to sway the judgement of some.

It was shortly after stumbling across this video through online hashtags for Algorand, that I noticed a thread had started in the community group for Algorand. It was evident that several people were falling victim and sending their Algo coins. Some even opting for the highest amount and sending over 150k in Algo.

Shortly after this thread popped up and enough people went into the live stream, to find out comments were switched off (shock). To give the video a thumbs down and to report it, the video was removed by the account holder.

Shortly after, another live stream was uploaded. This time it was of a male voice talking in detail (attempted detail, very basic "Algorand is good, like Cardano, they work on a Blockchain, don't miss the opportunity, buy now") about Algorand and reading all the information from Algorand's website. In a manner that was clearly his first time reading what he was seeing. (a true Cryptonite would know at least the basics of their favourite project by hand)

This live stream went on for around 3 hours, with no real substance, just some dude talking about Algorand. Whether or not it was a recorded voice over, or the culprit himself trying to hide his previous naugthy behaviour in a bid to make the account seem less moody. It was abrubtly stopped with a message saying that the account had been closed for breaching community guidelines.

Then, earlier today, Algorand release this through their now verified Twitter account.

According to the thread on Reddit, this scam was being heavily promoted on Twitter, claiming to be an official Algorand media outlet. Twitter being where the majority, if not all victims were found.

Considering how relatively quick this all unfolded, and how less than a day later Algorand receive their official status on Twitter. I definitely do believe there was a community influence in minimising thee effect and success of this scam.

Leading to the verification of and some reassuring dialogue from Algorand's official Twitter page.

I believe that the most productive way the crypto community can address situations like this, is by talking about them, letting potential would be Charlatons, Tricksters, Con Artists know that we are more aware than they believe we are.

Will it stop these types of flex's ever happening again. No.

Will it inspire a would be flex offender to think twice, maybe.

Will it inspire a would be victim to do a little more research when presented with an opportunity that seems to good to be true. Maybe.

It is by reading about such situations that helps one sharpen their Trickster senses. Giving more awareness and opening people's eyes to how these types of scams present themselves.
