We all know that the crypto market right now is *$%# compared to a few months ago. So I thought I would do some fun analysis on the Best and Worst Crypto performers of 2021.
What are my criteria?
1) Best Performers
I have taken the Crypto prices as of 3rd Jan 2021. WHAT IF ... we had sold them when they were at their All Time High (ATH)? I have looked at the top 100 cryptocurrencies, and just the top 25 cryptocurrencies, according to CoinMarketCap.
2) Worst Performers
WHAT IF ... we had bought them when they were at their All Time High (ATH)? I have compared them to Crypto prices as of 20th June 2021. Again, I have only looked at the top 100 cryptocurrencies, and just the top 25 cryptocurrencies, according to CoinMarketCap.
To baseline all Crypto's I have put in a base investment of 1,000 ($'s or £'s it doesn't matter as they are all relative)
Best Performers

Best Top 5 of the Top 25 Listed Currencies

None of the "Top 25" cryptocurrencies made it into the Top 5 of the "Top 100" Best Performers. The small fry seem to have performed the best this year.
However I think that Dogecoin had the last doggie laugh - in that it increased over a whopping seven thousand percent between 3rd Jan 2021 and its ATH on 8th May 2021. Oh for a crystal ball...!
Worst Performers
Worst Top 5 of the Top 100 Listed Currencies

Worst Top 5 of the Top 25 Listed Currencies

Bitcoin SV (BSV) and Celsius (CEL) are both in the Top 5 worst performers for the Top 100 and Top 25 cryptocurrencies. If you had purchased some of this coin at the start of the year, you would have made just over a 10% loss.
It is not all doom and gloom though. In the Top 25 currencies, you would only have to look at 3rd place to see that you would have had a small return compared to the start of the year. In the Top 100 it is 7th place TerraUSD (UST) that takes this honour.
What is success?
It all depends on when and how you have invested.
- If you bought prior to the start of this year and have just HODL'd your crypto, then you are likely to have seen your capital increase in value (although a loss with some coins).
- If you bought prior to the start of the year, and played the investment game, you are now more likely to have "made" some money in the markets during the bull run in Q1 2021, as well as your capital having increased in value.
- If you bought later in the year (or "dollar price averaged") then you are likely to have made a loss. This is where I am at, as I only started my journey into Crypto in Feb / March this year. I am quite philosophical though. It has been a great journey and learning curve for me. And I have never invested more than I can afford to lose
