The content below is my personal opinion. Brave doesn't guarantee anything.
Check out the Presearch Browser (Unofficial) application.
Brave is definitely a leader in the browser industry with over 25 million active monthly users. So, what makes the Brave browser special? Combined with the advanced ad-blocking technology and new advertising system, Brave stands tall from other major browsers. Many Brave users are happy with the BAT tokens they get for free. BAT being valued at 1.2 $ is one of the top 100 crypto-currencies used world wide. But being dependent on other search engines like Google and Duckduckgo, Brave has a hard time securing privacy and reaching mass audience. So, Brave planned to launch their own search engine and acquired Tailcat.
Why Brave chose Tailcat?
Tailcat is an open source search engine, capable of delivering high security and privacy which Brave definitely needs. "The Tailcat search engine is built on top of a completely independent index, capable of delivering the quality people except, but without compromising their privacy", read a blog post announcing the acquisition. In addition Brave is also looking for block-chain based solutions to step ahead further in privacy similar to Presearch.
What can we expect?
- I personally think Brave will look for a catchy name other than "Brave Search Engine".
- Brave ads and rewards will roll out for search engine- I personally think they will stop the random pop up ads viewed in the browser, so that everyone will start using the search engine to get rewards. What type of advertising model they take is a mystery. "With Brave Rewards, ad matching happens directly on your device and removes the need to leak personal data to provide relevant advertising." -read a official post describing the pop up ads viewed in the browser. They might - 1. reuse the same advertising model for the search engine(high probability) 2. use the keyword staking model using BAT token (moderate probability - On one side, we can't expect every company to stake BAT and on the other side, staking BAT can actually help the ecosystem and promotes the token value) or even 3. use the same approach Google follows (least probability)
- Brave may develop a block-chain based search engine(after gathering user base for tailcat), but not in the near future.
