Today is the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities. It is a holiday commemorating national literary icon Luís Vaz de Camões, who died on the 10th of June, 1580. He was the author of "The Lusiads" (also called "The Lusiad"), Portugal's national epic poem celebrating Portuguese history and achievements. The poem focuses mainly on the 15th-century Portuguese discoveries, which brought fame and fortune to the country, and is considered one of the finest and most important works in Portuguese literature. Free editions in Portuguese and English are available through a simple web search.
