President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador has officially turned himself into a meme. A prominent meme re-tweeter, the leader of the South American country has changed his profile picture to a shot of himself with a McDonald's hat and name tag photoshopped on him. This comes as Bitcoin continues its weekly tumble.
My initial reaction was disbelief: I thought this was fake. But no, the President really did this. How must the people of El Salvador feel about this? Imagine the older population who despise Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. I'm sure the tech-savy youth are loving it. It just seems ridiculous to me that the leader of a country would portray himself in such a manner. Believe me, I get it. I know the guy is a Bitcoin ultra bull and has clearly embraced the entire crypto culture. But it just seems out of place to me.
What's really shocking to me is how this man is not yet trending on Twitter. I suppose it is still early yet. Sometimes there's an 8-12 hour delay to get that kind of reaction.
