On March 9, 2023 an ensemble of experts discussed the question "is artificial intelligence out of control?" as part of the Great Talk, Inc. season of talks. The panel consisted of:
- Rama Chellappa, Chief Scientist of The Johns Hopkins Institute for Assured Autonomy
- Kathleen Featheringham, Director of AI Practice, Booz Allen Hamilton
- Peter Levin, Co-Founder & CEO of Amida Technology Solutions
- Marc Rotenberg, President & Founder of the Center for AI and Digital Policy
David Ignatius, associate editor for the Washington Post, moderated the discussion.
Everyone on the panel made reference to 2021's The Age of AI: And Our Human Future, co-authored by Henry Kissinger, Eric Schmidt, and Daniel Huttenlocher. Essentially, all four members of the panel disagreed with the book's doomsday warning that AI will bring about a dangerous future.
My takeaway from the talk is that a future where AI is implemented, working side-by-side with humans, is both a reasonable and the most logical path forward. AI is not meant to replace humans, but rather improve certain aspects of life and make them more efficient. For example, a doctor using an AI program to make diagnoses on patients won't fully rely on the program to make final decisions, but will use recommendations produced by the AI and make the final decision, based on a combination of their experience and education and what the data leads the AI program to conclude. Ultimately, while AI will be used in a wide variety of applications, it will be humans that have the final decision in all matters and can override an AI at any time when it is deemed necessary and fitting.
