Most people still refer to them as junior highers-after that uniquely American educational institution called junior high school-even though middle schools continue to replace and outnumber junior high schools in many areas of the country. In the middle of the 20th century, young adolescent approximately 10-14 years old were isolated as category, and schools were created especially for them because it was recognized that early adolescence is unique. 10-14 years old are not the same as elementary school children. But neither are they like the adolescents who attend high school. They are the in between group, and they belong in a category all their own.

But simply labeling or categorizing them is not enough.
