Thailand Threatens Facebook with Lawsuit for Cryptocurrency Scam

By riberet19 | Riberet19 | 22 Aug 2023

Thailand has threatened Facebook with a court order to shut down Facebook in the region unless it deals with all the cryptocurrency-related scams that are happening on the platform.

The region's own digital minister stated that more than 200,000 people had been victims of deceptions and scams related to cryptocurrencies in which some even used well-known public figures and financial figures.

Currently the Ministry of Economy and Digital Societies is collecting evidence on all fraudulent ads related to cryptocurrencies circulating on Facebook to request a court asking for the cessation of Facebook operations in the region.

The ministry has also stated that they had previous conversations with Meta about what was happening, but they have not controlled advertisers after the talks and the issue has gotten worse.

It is expected that in a few days they will have all the evidence ready to request the trial against Facebook and ask for the closure of the platform in the area.
