Quantum Computing Updates

The Quantum realm continues to advance, let's review several of the recent industry updates.

April '26 - McKinsey Quantum Report

This report shows Quantum computing is now reaching a “commercial tipping point."  It is worth it downloading this report and understanding all aspects of Quantum impact. See the URL in the resource section.

One call out, is how US utilities are planning for new power load from Quantum demand. Think for a minute the impact on other industries, Health/Medical, Life Sciences, financial, etc. The use cases go on and on.

IBM has been in the news a couple of times since my last update

June 23 - IBM pairs with AMD on Advanced Hybrid Quantum Super computing strategy.

Why leave money on the table, IBM can compete effectively in Super computing and Quantum and perhaps bring a new form of hybrid computer to the masses. Such a hybrid would bring quantum computers integrating with HPC clusters and AI systems that handle workload orchestration, simulation, optimization, data movement, and preprocessing.

Aug 3rd - IBM reached  70 logical qubits, executed more than 2,400 logical two-qubit operations and reduced logical error rates to one-tenth of the underlying physical errors. This feat was accomplished via a new error correcting method.  IBM working with Univ. of Chicago proved out 'Quantum Advantage' the task was completed in 15-minutes vs legacy computing would take lifetimes!   Put another way the team(s) executed 2,415 logical two-qubit operations and 468 logical T gates. Achieving logical error rates ten times lower than the underlying physical error rates, according to the organizations!

Aug 19th - IBM advances Quantum computing with modular Cryogenic Systems

IBM successfully joined two cryogenic modules to create a single environment designed, this advancement is important for larger and more fault tolerant quantum systems.

Details on the cryogenic modules

When connected together they stand more than 8 feet tall and is 8 feet wide, and testing showed that they can cool to 4 degrees Kelvin (-452.5 Fahrenheit). This format allows connecting in a tight row and directly link quantum processors with their L-coupler technology, which connects separate chips and lets them function as a single processor.

All these advancements are part of IBM's pledge of $10 Billion towards quantum development.

IBM CEO stated "IBM Chief Executive Arvind Krishna said on Mad Money that quantum computing would have “a measurable impact” on IBM’s top and bottom line by 2028 or 2029."

News from other Quantum vendors

Aug 20th Dirac Labs

Held pre-seed funding round to the tune of $1.8 million. Allowing them to start building ultra-accurate quantum positioning sensor device prototypes.  These are no ordinary sensor, no these come with come with AI models that handle the real-time signal processing and sensor fusion.  Transforming faint signals into a precise position, even when external conditions change.  I like the way they are thinking and will follow them closely

Sept 3rd - Quantum Motion

Held a successful  'C' round of funding. Recall Quantum Motion is focused upon  industrial quantum scalability.  All while doing so using standard silicon CMOS fabrication technology. Yep the mainframe lives on in Quantum and is standing out for their use of standard technology instead of reinventing the wheel again.  Their approach also controls costs.

Summary

Industry consulting heavy weight McKinsey stated we are at a commercial tipping point for Quantum. Additionally, IBM has made large strides in terms of Quantum advancements, Hybrid computing with AMD, 70 qubits while proving out Quantum models, Modular interconnecting racks to allow quantum at scale in cold environments.   Funding for Quantum startups continue to flow in helping to build out the Quantum ecosystem today into the future. Are you learning about Quantum yet?
