IBM Quantum Computing Updates
IBM opens first quantum computing center in Europe - Oct 7 '24
IBM sees the opportunity to sell more quantum computers in Europe by having the ability to bring in customers to an actual quantum center and show them how different they are from legacy computers they really are. The impact is in the traditional datacenter. See quantum computers operate in very cold temperatures where-as most legacy data centers can get by with room temperature air (normal operating temperature range 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit)
Quantum Computers are very subject to heat as heat creates errors in the qubits. Ideal operating environment is absolute zero. So if you are like me and have forgotten as much high school chemistry as possible that is -459 degrees Fahrenheit, so yeah that's cold. So the customers will have to view the quantum computer thru looking glass.
IBM opens its quantum-computing stack to third parties - Sept 27th '24
I missed this post on Sept. 27th. so I lumped it into this update, hope you don't mind. IBM has opened its stack to third parties. That means, they will be able to run their code on IBM Quantum Computers.
Think of the opportunities residing in these categories:
- Software that converts abstract representations of quantum algorithms into the series of commands needed to execute them (one could look at it like a legacy software compiler.)
- Transform generic instructions into a precise series of actions that will execute whatever algorithm has been encoded
- Benchmarking workloads
- Modifying their own software stack to better understand errors or error suppression
What has IBM permitted?
Unlike in the early '90's when IBM had the best product but kept developers and partners at bay... Yes, I am talking about the worlds 1st PC based OS; OS/2. In today's data driven economies developers are the life-blood of innovation, opening Quantum Computers to developers year before they are ready to usurp legacy computers make complete sense. Allow developers to experiment with the next generation of technology as it is still being developed so it can have a wider adoption base right out of the gate
Recall IBM Open Sourced Qiskit earlier this year.
Summary
Q324 was a barn burner for Quantum Computing Updates, and I fully expect role of the Quantum software stack to expand considerably over the next few years. IBM has unlocked its quantum software stack to unlock potential earnings as well as bringing its own quantum center to Europe. Who is up for a visit?
