If you follow the world of art and design, you probably know about the ‘pico’ movement. For those who don't, pico stands for ‘tiny picture computer image’ and it refers to small, pixelated images that are used in place of images of people and animals in web design and for graphic fiction.
If you're a fan of the ‘80s and of early ‘90s computer animations, like Liquid Metal Band or Ristar, you'll love LeDot. It is the perfect excuse for aging millennials and Generation Z to rediscover the beauty of computer icons and cartoons. It is a project where you can bring your own pixel image creations to life as a non-fungible token. This is an entirely new type of ERC721 token, which is a 100 by 100 canvas with a total of 10,000 pixels.
Why are people drawing back to pixel art?
It's likely that the recent explosion of popularity for pixel art is due to a confluence of trends. First off, the ‘80s nostalgia trend. We all want to be a part of that nostalgic rush now that summer is almost here, ha. Combine that with the ‘meme magic’ that took over the internet in 2017 and you can see why people are drawn to pixel art. LeDot is an easy canvas for the creative mind to toy with and can be individually designed by filling the blockchain dots with colors.
Actually, you can see a lot of pixel art on social media platforms like TikTok, where the individual ‘dots' are easily identifiable. It makes for a more interesting, engaging, and immersive experience.
How does LeDot work?
If you're building an image in a graphics program like Photoshop or GIMP, you're going to start running into issues with pixels. But there is something better – LeDot. The more pixels you have, the more detail you can add, but it also means you have more pixels to work with – up until a point.
There are going to be 10,000 blank canvases available in the initial mint (each 100 x 100 in size). Each wallet can mint up to 10 tokens once minting is enabled. The expected public mint date is going to be announced in discord server as well as the mint price.
After you successfully minted or bought a canvas, you’re now entitled to create your very own NFT with mostly any content accepted by the ethics committee selected from the project community. This is going to be possible for 6 months after the public mint date.
The future of pixels
Pixels are still the perfect choice for designers who want to add a little bit of ‘naissance'. When you look at the artwork of some of the greatest names in history, you'll see that they all doted on little, pixelated images – be they scientists or philosophers.
This isn't to say that all pixel art is created equal. Just like any other style of art, there are varying degrees of skill and talent involved.
Some people are able to create beautiful works of art that are completely free of any unsightly spaces while others have to rely on techniques like blur to keep their work looking neat. Still, for the most part, pixels are here to stay. They might not be for everybody, but for those who love the simplicity and craftsmanship that goes into a well-executed pixel design, it's more than worth it. If you are ready to start creating in this cozy style, you should definitely follow the LeDot project and create your first pixelated non-fungible canvas.
