What is the economic purpose of society? What do we aim for economically? Leaving aside the specifics of politics, such as setting minimum prices, price controls or taxes, what is the economy for society, what should be its purpose or goals? In this post we will discuss what is the economic goal of society as a whole, what goal does the collective unconscious of society agree on, what should we strive for. And to understand this, we must understand the virtues by which we judge and the virtues by which we act. The virtues by which we judge are truth, goodness and beauty. The virtues by which we act as a society are freedom, equality and justice. So we will leave aside the values by which we judge. We will focus on the values by which we act. Because these three key values - freedom, equality, justice - are the values that society strives for. We may not realize it, there are leftists and rightists among us, and the pendulum constantly swings in both directions, but we as a people, as a whole, understand that we must have some kind of goal.
Freedom. As for freedom, I believe that if we expand individual freedoms as much as possible, then society as a whole will begin to grow towards the greater good. But freedom is a limited good. Of course, you can't show a child a movie rated for mature audiences, for example. Or you can't just yell "fire" in a crowded movie theater. You can't drive on the wrong side of the road. You won't do that because freedom has its limits. Freedom is good. But it's not the highest good, it's not an unlimited good.
Equality. What about equality? We all want to be equal, we want poverty to be reduced, we want indifference to economic situations. But, you know, in life, everyone has a different deck of cards, and of course this is about economic equality. In a universal sense, we are all 100 percent equal. But it's very difficult to measure equality and how we achieve goals, and maybe it's not even an idea. For example, look at the Soviet Union. Everyone was equal and no one owned anything, and everything starts going downhill and mixing into one gray soup, no one strives for self-realization. So maybe equality is not an ideal either. And that leaves us to be fair.
Justice. Justice is the sunnah, the highest good. We can have too much freedom and we can have too much equality, but there can never be too much justice. Can anyone ever say that we have too much justice in our society? I don’t think so, I think justice is the highest good, it’s what we all strive for and in our hearts we want it. If you were to imagine a scale, justice would be at the top and equality and freedom are balanced and should be balanced. Justice is what should drive economic goals and policies. Whether you are on the left or the right, I think everyone can agree that it is necessary to build a society on the principles of human justice. And that is justice towards ourselves, but also towards individuals. As Adam Smith noted, every action of an individual is connected with other people, and thus society as a whole is a collective unconscious. Ideas of justice may change over time and as our social consciousness grows. But the point is, if we don't go into the specific policies of price regulation and taxation, but in order to have a conceptual basis, according to which there are three great ideas for society within which we operate - freedom, equality and justice. And justice is the highest idea. Justice is the highest economic goal of society.
