Polkadot 0.8.27 has been released - see release notes here: https://github.com/paritytech/polkadot/releases/tag/v0.8.27

Web3 Foundation's grants program has now issued 200 grants - and 100 of those are since May 2020. https://medium.com/web3foundation/web3-foundation-grants-program-funds-over-200-projects-ff499f438820

Have you ever wanted to access the Polkadot API via the command line? You can use api-cli. https://github.com/polkadot-js/tools/tree/master/packages/api-cli

Polkascan has released an update on their PolkADAPT project. PolkADAPT provides a single multichain namespace to abstract data used in multichain applications. https://github.com/polkascan/social-contract/blob/master/kusama/treasury-proposal-57-report-20210111.md

SRTool - Substrate Runtime Tool - can help you build and verify your own Wasm runtime blobs, to ensure that what the runtime code being put on-chain is the code you expect. https://gitlab.com/chevdor/srtool

The max number of validators continues to increment by one each day, up to 297. Currently this value is at 287. https://polkadot.js.org/apps/?rpc=wss%3A%2F%2Frpc.polkadot.io#/staking

Jaco has issued a great summary of what happened in 2020 for Polkadot-JS, including the API and UI. https://jacogr.medium.com/polkadot-js-2020-flashback-18e1393cfba7

The W3F Polkadot and Kusama RPC endpoints have been taken down for an indefinite period of time. We have updated DNS to point to Parity's endpoint but it may take a while for this to propagate.

If you need a public endpoint ASAP, use Parity's at rpc.polkadot.io or kusama-rpc.polkadot.io. However, we encourage people to run their own nodes and contribute to the decentralization of the network!

Reminder that there are no DOT airdrops and nobody reputable will contact you privately to "help you with your problem!" Be wary of scams! https://wiki.polkadot.network/docs/en/learn-scams

The Polkadot Treasury now has ~ 10.8 million DOT. If you are interested in building on Polkadot, see how to make a Treasury Proposal here: https://wiki.polkadot.network/docs/en/learn-treasury#creating-a-treasury-proposal

The next scheduled Treasury burn (if necessary) will be of an estimated 108'969 DOT in ~ 8 days. https://polkadot.js.org/apps/?rpc=wss%3A%2F%2Frpc.polkadot.io#/treasury`

There are now 18 tips proposed on Polkadot. See them here: https://polkadot.js.org/apps/?rpc=wss%3A%2F%2Frpc.polkadot.io#/treasury/tips

The lowest-value nominator which got into the solution set for this era was 73.7941173726 DOT. If a nominator is staking less than that, it is not likely to actively nominate in the next era.

A Workshop on Real-World Decentralized Cryptography was held on Thursday that included talks by several W3F researchers (& organized by Fatemeh Shirazi of W3F) http://rwc2021-real-world-decentralised-cryptography-workshop.w3f.community/

As a reminder to all, there is no way to "un-second" a proposal. If you second a proposal, the DOT are reserved (un-transferrable) until the proposal is tabled (i.e., becomes a referendum).

Rococo News

Requirements for running a parachain on the parachain testnet Rococo v1 are now on the Polkadot Wiki. https://wiki.polkadot.network/docs/en/build-parachains-rococo#rococo-v1-parachain-requirements

Plasm is now running as the fourth parachain on Rococo (after Tick/Trick/Track test parachains). https://polkadot.js.org/apps/?rpc=wss%3A%2F%2Frococo-rpc.polkadot.io#/parachains

There are now 18 parachain candidates who have submitted a proposal to connect to the Rococo relay chain (not including Plasm which has already connected). https://polkadot.js.org/apps/#/parachains

If you are interested in having your parachain connect, instructions for requesting a slot are on the Polkadot wiki - https://wiki.polkadot.network/docs/en/build-parachains-rococo#rococo-v1-parachain-requirements

Subscan now supports block exploration of Rococo. https://rococo.subscan.io/

Note that the Westend Faucet is now sending 1 WND per request, limit once per day (changed from 0.5 WND per request, limit two per day) https://wiki.polkadot.network/docs/en/learn-DOT#getting-westies
