Math is a good way to think about it, but in the end we're still using a theory to describe something more complex. The idea is to consistently improve, lest we just circle a slice of the proverbial potential energy well.

Money is useful, but it's also a base desire and highly corruptible. Gold can be used to transmit data and interact with molecules, but you need to know how it works if you want to do that, and maybe have some money to get it if you need to make a trade.
