Public Goods, Private Gains: How Web3 is Changing the Game

You've probably heard of Web3. But what is it really? Is it just a fancy way of saying "get rich quick" or is there something more to it? Well, buckle up, because we're about to explore this wild and exciting world, beyond the financial gains.

First off, let's debunk the myth that Web3/Crypto is all about money. Sure, we all need money to live, but is that all there is to life? Are we really here to just make a quick buck and call it a day? There's so much more to Web3 than that, and in this essay, I'm going to dive deep into the potential of this technology to create positive change in the world.

Now, you might be thinking, "Why should I care about Web3?" Well, let me tell you, you're exactly the reason why this essay exists. You're the future, and the decisions you make now will shape the world for generations to come. And guess what? Web3 is going to play a big role in that future.

Personal Experience: My Journey into Web3

I remember the frustration I felt the first time I tried to withdraw all my money from my bank and close the account. This was in 2002 and I was moving from the UK to Ireland. Before this, I hadn't really had to deal with my bank beyond day to day transacting with a debit account. The sheer amount of time I had to waste filling out forms and explaining what the money was for blew my mind.

It taught me how many restrictions were in place. And how ultimately I wasn't in control of my money. I started paying attention to my banking. I realised how every transaction was scrutinized, and if I dared to spend my own money in a way the bank didn't approve of, I would be jumping through bureaucratic hoops that literally involve telling them my life story.

Not to mention you're basically paying them to profit off your savings. The interest rates on savings accounts are laughably low despite the banks earning huge profits off customers' deposits.

Paper? What the hell is this? The Dark Ages?

Paper? What the hell is this? The Dark Ages?

When I first heard about Bitcoin and the idea of digital currencies existing outside the control of banks and governments; As someone who had felt stifled by the traditional financial system, the promise of financial freedom through crypto seemed incredibly appealing. I was immediately intrigued by this new decentralized model that didn't require permission or oversight from a centralized authority. However, at the time the technology was still in its early stages and not very user friendly. I messed around with mining but never really put much time and effort into it. I deeply regret that now. At the time I had other things on my mind, but that's a whole different story.

A few years went by as I continued to grow more frustrated with banking restrictions and high fees. That's when I stumbled upon an article explaining how Ethereum was enabling all sorts of new applications beyond just currency through its smart contract functionality. Being able to program transactions and automate processes without an intermediary blew my mind. This was when I realized the true promise of blockchain technology and became determined to learn more.

The Value of Public Goods in Web3

Public goods are resources that are available to all and benefit society as a whole. In the emerging Web3 ecosystem, public goods play a vital role in pushing the technology forward while making a positive difference.

Some key examples of public goods in the Ethereum and broader Crypto ecosystem include open-source software projects, documentation websites and educational communities. Take Gitcoin, for instance. This project funds open-source developers working on everything from crypto wallets to blockchain explorers. Without public contributions, many of the tools we rely on simply wouldn't exist.

Educational communities are another important public good. Sites like Bankless Academy teach people blockchain basics for free. By demystifying complex tech, these communities are building the workforce of the future.

We're all in this together.

We're all in this together.

Contributing to public goods isn't just altruistic - it can also be profitable. Projects like Optimism Collective reward builders with grants and tokens. For those willing to get their hands dirty with code, documentation or community organizing, Web3 offers new opportunities to make an impact and earn an income.

While traditional systems focus solely on profit, Web3 recognizes that progress requires cooperation. By supporting public goods with funding and participation, we can harness technology to solve shared problems like climate change (KlimaDAO), inequality and lack of opportunity. With creativity and collaboration, the next generation will build a future far beyond what came before.

Shifting the Focus: From Price Action to Real-World Impact

The crypto space is obsessed with price - just look at any Twitter/X feed on a day the market takes a dump. Staring at charts all day is bad for my mental health and my wallet and isn't really how I want to spend my time. For noobs and veterans alike, the never-ending pump and dumps can start to feel meaningless. Is there more to this blockchain thing than money?

I do love this stuff, but there has to be more to crypto!

I do love this stuff, but there has to be more to crypto!

Luckily, a shift is well underway. Projects like Gitcoin and Optimism Collective are proof that real impact matters more than green or red candles. By funding builders creating tools, knowledge and solutions, they're showing a new path forward. I don't know about you, but I'd rather be part of a revolution that actually builds solutions to problems rather than just being a new way to make money.

This change in focus could have massive effects. Imagine if half the energy spent day trading was instead put towards causes like education or healthcare using blockchain. We might actually change the world instead of just hoping our portfolios do.

The Power of Education in Web3

The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.

In the same way, learning requires chipping away bit by bit. But traditional education makes about as much sense as expecting one person to lift an entire mountain solo.

Lectures, exams and grades are about as engaging for students as watching paint dry. But in Web3, learning means getting your hands dirty from day one. Sites like layer3.xyz are flipping the script by teaching through using - you don't just read about crypto, you use it. I will be writing an essay on my experience using layer3 so keep an eye out for that.

Traditional systems focus only on profits, but Web3 recognizes progress requires cooperation. By supporting builders creating public resources, we can harness technology to solve shared problems. And through hands-on learning that empowers creation over consumption, the next gen will develop solutions our dusty institutions never dreamed of.

So in summary - don't just stare at charts all day hoping to get rich. Roll up your sleeves and get involved by contributing to projects creating real change. Who knows, you might even learn something while making the world a little bit better.

And if traditional school or worklife didn't teach you everything you need to know, maybe it's time to drop out and follow the rebels coding a new future under the trees. The revolution happens one line of code at a time - so what are you waiting for, get to it!
