Struggled to put the article together before and left it in drafts. At the time, it was about doing the right thing and a lot has changed. Right now, that's not clicking that damn 2 day shipping button unless you have to. I want to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and help businesses deal with its aftermath in the short term, not move your daughter's Barbie playhouse on 2 day shipping.
Started working part time at a logistics organization. Moving things from A to B. Coding, networking, waiting, exercising and HODLin have all been a part of my routine. I'm actually having fun with it if you consider 2 piping hot baths, daily full body covered in Icy Hot, and day to night hours being blurred fun. Seriously, I thought it would have been terrible, but the pace and constant exercise at this point have been beneficial. I dropped all the weight I gained initially when coming back home with low motivation and enough hope to fit in a marble.
However, every day has gotten longer and longer. Your 2 day shipping order goes thru hands like mine. For me, it doesn't matter: no kids, good family, I live close, I'm saving. I've seen immediate returns in BTC, DAI, ATM, and BAT I've earned here, on Coinbase Earn and purchased. This isn't the case for everyone. Many of the people I work with have no where to go. Reasons range from lost their job and need immediate cash, kids at home to feed, to elderly and need to work to survive. I worked in a truck recently in a team of three; the other two were old enough to be my grandparents. Big picture, this is all quite fucked.
Your 2 day shipping items could be close or far. Here in Chicago or on the other side Ontario. Point is, it's got to get to you as soon as possible. Speed in this case is essential and gets compromised is safety and efficiency. Trucks got to come in and out. Planes got to land unload and load. People have to be asked to move thousands (and right now tens of thousands) of packages. With low wages and a time crunch for some, I hope the place that packaged your ordered cared for it enough to put extra tape or a cushion. I've seen some items arrive looking like they a round with Mike Tyson.
It's terribly inefficient for non-essential items. Packages need to get rushed out on planes and sent out on strict timelines to get to your front door. You're wasting jet fuel, diesel fuel, trees and causing added CO2 emissions whenever you click that 2-Day Shipping button. I was guilty of this too! I was informed up until three weeks ago when I got to see things first hand and do my research.
The Amazon's, UPS's and more need to do a better job of informing people and offering incentives not to do the 2 day shipping option. Sounds cool and you spent you annual $99-$129 to get it. It isn't worth it. Every time I hear a bag jingle with pills or have to move a crematory drum from A to B because there are literally THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DYING EVERYDAY, I feel more of a sense of purpose. Again, its all quite fucked to think about, but you're needed no matter how big or small.....then comes the mini kids replica Maserati some family out in Oshkosh ordered on two day shipping. Let it be an indictment on this country that while people are starving, getting evicted, getting infected, and struggling that we couldn't do like some more reasonable western countries and ban the sale of non-essential items in supermarkets and online.
Just be a normal person and do the $35+ minimum to get free shipping dude. Trust me, the 4-5 days it takes to get your electric toothbrush to you will see it less damaged, take less of a toll on the environment and make this COVID-19 world a slightly better inside of a furnace.
