Ripple launched a series of developer challenges at ETH Denver: https://blog.xpring.io/building-bridges-at-eth-denver/
It was one of the largest Ethereum hackathons and conferences in the U.S.
The idea of challenge was connect the 2 very popular cryptocurrencies: XRP and ETH.

That can be achieved by coders by using Interledger Protocol (ILP). That protocol was introduced by Ripple in late 2015, and is designed to give companies an easy way to exchange currencies, including both fiat and crypto assets.
Xpring (which is a Ripple's open developer platform for money) sponsored three challenges. Each challenge was focused on building bridges between XRP Ledger (XRP) and Ethereum (ETH) over Interledger Protocol (ILP).
As Warren Paul Anderson from Xpring team said:
"We think the XRP to ETH and ERC-20 tokens bridge is important since XRP is one of the most liquid crypto currencies in the world, but doesn’t have a compute layer to support complex smart contracts for the growing Decentralized Finance (DeFi) market on Ethereum.”
So Ripple is looking to build a financial bridge between XRP and Ethereum (ETH) - to take a benefits from both of that Cryptos :)
