Originally the C Clasics and then the Canadian Classics, this psychedelic band formed in 1961. Their 1968 self-titled album is their first release as The Collectors.
Side 1 is 5 songs highlighted by She and Lydia Purple. She, has a wonderful riff that reminds me of the contemporary punk band Parquet Courts (a favorite of mine). Lydia is a "wish we were The Beatles" track that I could really groove to. Then there is Howard Christman's Older; a strange biographical song about a young genius who peaks at age 17. He invents some cool things but had trouble with the world peace machine everyone was waiting for.
Side 2 is just one long song. The What Love suite is a 19+ minute journey that tries to understand love, fate, and gender. It's loud, fast, slow, melodic, angry noise and more. Sections of spanish guitar, church organ, smooth jazz saxophone, and spoken word poetry abruptly start and end throughout, leaving you exhausted and perplexed. "Does someone hear"?
I heard it. But did I "hear" it? Is it deep or just a psilocybin trip? Two great songs make this album worth the listen but maybe not good enough to buy. I was looking for a psychedelic album I hadn't heard and stumbled upon this one at Hungry Ear in Honolulu. I have to admit, it was the album art that got me.
