The season had barely started and Chelsea got their first trophy. Being the winner of the Champions League against Manchester City, they earned the right to stake their claim for the cup against the winner of the tie between Villarreal and Manchester United - Europa League final. Both Manchester teams lost and Chelsea took on Villarreal for this Supercup encounter.

Villarreal won their first major trophy against United back in May and they were hoping to repeat the feat by adding to their trophy cabinet against Chelsea but they fell short and Kepa came to the rescue for the Blues.

Still fresh from the preseason, both teams were raring to go and it was an end to end game as both had their moments in the game. As expected, it wasn't a game of free flow and flair as you would expect for the first major game into the new season but Chelsea did just enough to get their hands on the trophy which would serve as a huge motivation for the new season.

Timo Werner should have put Chelsea up in the 6th minute when his expert and cheeky attempt was met with bravery by the goalkeeper who save the attempt on goal from the corner kick as it fell to Timo at the edge of the post.

The goal came for Chelsea in the 27th minute when Havertz was sent through on the byline. His brilliantly worked low drive ball into the box missed Werner but found Ziyech who powered the effort beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.

Villarreal had few chances of their own but Chelsea held firm with Mendy giving them a critical save in the 32nd minute before Kante also cleared another danger in the box. The goalscorer left the pitch due to a dislocated shoulder and Pulisic came into the fray. It would be a blow for Chelsea if he would be out for a period of time because they would want to have all their players kicking as early as possible so as to gain advantage in the League. We all know how tricky the Premier League is and every team had to be at their best with available best hands possible.

Chelsea got saved by the crossbar just before halftime as the ball fell sweetly to Alberto Moreno who smashed his shot but it came off under the crossbar and didn't cross the line. What a goal that would have been for Villarreal. Chelsea dropped their tempo and that allowed Villarreal to come back into the game.

Villarreal would feel particularly unlucky as Mendy strangely miskicked as the ball fell to Villarreal. The trusted Gerard Moreno was found and his effort struck the upright and came off it with the goal at his mercy. Chelsea would feel particularly lucky to be saved twice by the post. He got his goal finally in the 72nd minute when he received a brilliant back pass after a poor pass from Rudiger set Villarreal on course. Gerard Moreno didn't waste any time as he slotted home this time around.

The game went into extra time as they ended the regular time, 1-1.

Pulisic missed his chance 10 minutes into the extra time after he was set through but he missed just by a margin as he struck the ball with the outside of his boot. He should be scoring that kind of a chance right inside the box but Villarreal for lucky too.

Nothing to separate the two sides as the game headed for penalties. Thomas Tuchel made a tactical decision by introducing Kepa into the fray while taking off Mendy as the game was certain to be heading into penalties. It proved to be a right decision as Kepa saved two brilliant penalties.

Havertz missed the first spot kick for Chelsea as Villarreal got the advantage. Gerard Moreno scored his own while Azpilicueta also buried his own chance. Mandi blew the advantage of Villarreal as his effort was expertly saved by Kepa. Both continued the spotkick and it came to sudden death - the first to lose. Rudiger scored but Raul Albiol failed to get his effort across the line as Kepa saved the second spot kick of the night to hand Chelsea the win.

Chelsea defeated Villarreal 6-5 on penalties and congratulations to Chelsea FC. They started the new season just as they ended the last one. Well done!
