Chelsea hosted Atletico Madrid in West London for their round of 16, second leg tie to determine who goes through to the Quarter Finals. Chelsea edged the first leg by a solitary goal from Giroud and they got their job done in the second leg by being clinical.
Carrasco had the first shot of the night when his attempted lob into the back of the net was carefully gathered by Mendy in the 3rd minute. Nothing really separated these two teams as they couldn't find the final touch to get ahead.
The moment of truth came when Kieran Trippier's attempted delivery into the box was blocked off in the 34th minute by Timo Werner. The ball fell to Havertz who ran the length of the field before feeding Werner on the side. Werner unselfishly located Ziyech at the other end of the box and laid a pass to him in the box. Ziyech wasted no time as he slotted the ball home with the goalkeeper unable to do much to keep it out even though it went in from under him. Chelsea went up 1-0 and 2-0 on aggregate to make it a mountain top for Atletico Madrid.
Atletico tried to respond and Joao Felix had a deflected shot saved by Mendy in the 39th minute. In the 48th minute, Ziyech brilliantly lost his markers and played in Timo Werner only for his effort to be saved from the tight angle he attempted it.
Ziyech was having a filled day as he had another strike in the 56th minute which Oblak expertly pushed over for a corner kick from the edge of the box after Reece James found Ziyech with the ball.
The moment of madness came for Savic when he elbowed Rudiger in the box in the 80th minute. The referee spotted the infringement and gave him a straight red card. The red card already made an impossible task even more difficult for Atletico as they were reduced to 10 men.
Atletico can also argue their own case for this match because they had a penalty appeal waved off when Azpilicueta pulled their man in the box. A lot of people claimed it should have been a penalty and a red card but the referee waved it off.
In the 92nd minute, Mendy was determined to keep his clean sheet when a lofted pass fell to Joao Felix right in the box. His brilliant cutback gave him more space to shoot and he did but his thumping shot was carefully saved for a corner Mendy. His alertness and big hands saved the ball there.
Chelsea ended this contest in the 93rd minute to make it 2-0 when Pulisic ran the length of the field. With Kante to his right and substitute Emerson to his left, he fed the ball to Emerson who took a composed shot into the back of the net and put his team 3-0 on aggregate. It was a deserved win for Chelsea as they nullified Atletico's attack and punished them with being clinical. Chelsea are through to the Quarter-Finals.
