A win from Southampton would have taken them to second on the table. What a remarkable run they have been on.

Manchester City is still struggling. From the tempo of their match, to time wastage and still lack of goals, you can say this win they got hanged on a thread for the majority of this match.

Surprisingly, Southampton played so well against City and had so many opportunities to get a draw or at least win it. City took the lead with a brilliant goal from Sterling. He positioned himself so well for the ball in from De Bruyne but it was a lovely play out from Ederson. City enjoys building from the back - they love their goalkeeper being part of their build-up to the goals.

Southampton spent the whole of the game searching for answers but couldn't find them as City still showed flashes of their brilliance and were also resilient at the back.

City wasted so many chances too with Mahrez, Silva and Sterling being the culprits. If they had scored, they would have been out of sight. Southampton were persistent hoping to draw level since the game was still at 1-0 but what has plagued City up to this point happened again, which is lack of their free scoring exploits.

City moved up to 5th temporarily before United will play against Leeds United too.
