On August 5, Coinbase’s Layer 2 network Base experienced a rare hiccup — block production on the network stalled for nearly 20 minutes, causing a temporary halt to activity and raising questions across the crypto community.
The issue was first spotted by Chinese journalist Colin Wu, who reported that block #33,792,704 had gone unupdated for 19 minutes, based on data from BaseScan. Analytics firm OKLink soon confirmed the same.
While the issue has since been resolved and the network is once again running normally, this marks the first-ever recorded outage for Base since its launch.
What Caused the Outage?
There’s no official explanation yet, but speculation is swirling.
Some in the crypto space suggested a potential hacker attack, though there’s no evidence to support this. Others — including analysts at The Block — pointed to a more likely culprit: overwhelming network demand.
Since the recent rebranding of the Base App, the network has seen a surge in usage. In just one month, daily token launches jumped from 6,649 to over 50,000 — a massive spike that may have stressed network resources.
And it's not just tokens — on July 27, Base even surpassed Solana in the number of newly launched assets.
Why Base Is Still One of the Most Promising L2s
Despite the glitch, Base continues to impress as a high-performance Ethereum Layer 2 built using Optimism's OP Stack and backed by Coinbase, one of the most trusted names in crypto.
Here’s why developers and users are flocking to Base:
✅ Scalability: Lower fees and faster transactions than Ethereum mainnet
✅ Security: Built on Ethereum, with Coinbase-grade infrastructure
✅ Ecosystem Growth: Rapid adoption by dApps, token creators, and DeFi platforms
✅ Developer Support: Easy onboarding with familiar tooling and clear documentation
✅ Mainstream Gateway: Integration with Coinbase helps onboard retail users
This outage — while notable — is also a sign of growth. Networks under pressure tend to reveal their weak points early, allowing builders to fix and improve before the stakes get higher.
We’re Watching Closely
As a Base RPC provider, we keep a close eye on the health of major blockchain networks like Base. Outages, latency, or performance issues — we’re watching and adapting in real time to ensure smooth operation for the projects we support.
In fast-moving ecosystems like Base, proactive monitoring and infrastructure stability are essential.
