United States SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, speaking at a conference on Nov. 9, said that the US government was slow to regulate the cryptocurrency market and that regulation in the space could be faster.
- Peirce was speaking at CoinDesk’s Bitcoin for Advisors event, discussing many related topics but stressing particularly on lawmakers’ approach to regulation
- After saying that rule changes were slow so as to ensure the implementation of feedback, Peirce admitted that the old financial rules didn’t make much sense for the unprecedented nature of cryptocurrencies
- She said, “There are areas we are going to have to make adjustments and I do think we should move faster … I’m impatient there”
- Regarding political support, the commissioner remarked that the US had bipartisan support for crypto
- Peirce is known as ‘Crypto Mom’ for her support of the technology and encouragement of innovation; she was recently approved for her second term as SEC commissioner
- She has signaled her support for the cryptocurrency market on multiple occasions, though she has pointed out that regulators will take action where needed, such as in the case of BitMEX
