Manners Make the Man!

One of my goals for 2026 is to be more refined, specifically the use of manners.  Over the Christmas holiday I re-watched The Kingsman, and there was a quote in the movie that hit a chord.  'Manners Maketh the Man'. We don't quite say it that way here in America but you get the point.

As a society it seems we have lost a great deal of respect for each other and manners have fallen by the way side. Perhaps it started in the 1990's when we pivoted away from wearing suits and ties to work. The shift was to business casual and it feels like those standards have lessened considerably.  Consider your most recent trip to the big box store to pickup essentials. Did you see some sights you wish you could unsee?  I am not talking about what they are wearing it’s about what they are not wearing? Barely any coverings, not bathed. 

I don't want to make this a rant, here is how I am changing in 2026:

I will use 'Please' and , 'thank you' more.  Small tokens of gratitude too!

I also intend to hold the door for those coming behind me and those exiting.  Sure, initially it might not feel like much but maybe this one slight act of professionalism and common sense can brighten someone's day.

I need to pause prior to speaking acknowledge others speaking I value what they say instead of speaking to be heard, speaking for impact.

I plan to use a bit more formal emails in work settings. 

I plan to stand a bit straighter.

I plan to avoid putting my arms on the dinner table!

Summary

Certainly, most of these seem like common sense and basic etiquette, however, I feel I need to start somewhere and know that I am already doing these small tweaks. A new habit takes about 30-45 days to cement and I am reviewing them daily as a reminder and to reinforce this new habit. All of which should unlock what I was taught as a child, so like riding a bike.    Maybe just maybe I can influence others down this journey too!  Perhaps we can make manners timeless!
