What Are your Feelings About Examinations?
We were subjected to Examinations under strict supervisions and security. The main role was to test if your nedula oblongata still remembered the things you learnt in life.
While this was not a bad idea after all but I detested Examinations. That is the time you were treated like a criminal and fear was instilled in you
At one time I sweated profusely and urine flowed down my pants and souled my sweet uniform to the embarrassment it gave me.
Usually in exam room my brain ran blank and I couldn't tell what 1+2 was. Am an old man now but believe mevyiu, the phobia still lingers in my mind till now.
So exams subjected us to fear........?
Maybe your mind has began branding me as a poor learner. No! I was smart, very smart.
Our Kenyan government is making history this year as far as Examinations are concerned. We are making a transition from the 8:4:4 system of Education. Lest you do not know, this is a system where a child spends 8 years in primary Education, 4 years in Secondary Education and 4 years in university respectively. The primary pupils used to do K.C. P. E examination as a gauge to allow you enter Secondary. K.C.P.E stands for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education.
Whoa....!
After 4 years in Secondary, one did K. C. S. E as a hurdle to join university. This was Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.
Now we have a new system known as CBC which is Competency Based Curriculum. They are doing the first exam this year abmnd it is done in grade six.
Now we have more than four exams taking place respectively.
- Grade six are doing an exam so as to enter junior secondary.
- Grade 8 are doing an exam to enter Secondary.
- Form four students are doing an exam to enter University.
There are also other exams in colleges, Tertiary institutions and universities.
Examinations, Examinations, Examinations! If I was in the poem Ancient Mariner, I will say
Examinations, Examinations everywhere nor any simple time to breathe.....
No breathing space really ....
