It is a mushroom with an unusual appearance and unique shape. It resembles dangling tiny icicles of frozen water, or an airy ball gown. You can watch it for hours, admiring the miracle of nature.
This mushroom has an irregular shape. It can be elongated, spherical, oval of variable length and width. Most often, the largest dimension may exceed 40 cm in length.
The structure of this mushroom resembles a coral, it consists of multiple branched members, ending in needles, quite loosely arranged. They form multiple clusters at the endings. Needles can reach up to 10 mm in length.
The young fruiting body is snow-white in color, with age it turns cream, pink, yellow, and becomes brown in old age.
Hericium clathroides flesh is very soft, spongy, delicate, pleasant to the touch. It has the color of the entire mushroom, and it changes it just like a mushroom. It has a delicate mushroom flavor and aroma.
Hericium clathroides is very rare. It appears in summer and grows until autumn, most often in the period from August to November. It prefers the old dead wet environment.
It can be found on trees or dead deciduous trees, such as beech, birch or oak. The coniferous variety likes firs and spruces most often. Sometimes it grows in places where live trees are injured. In Poland, it is a protected species.
The mushroom is edible, but has no culinary use for protection reasons. In the countries where it is obtained, it is considered a delicacy.
