King Alfred's cake - a very interesting arboreal mushroom

By madventure | Nature, Photography | 9 Feb 2024

This species of mushroom, although quite common, is rarely found, due to its appearance. It is not very characteristic, the shape and color blend in perfectly with the surroundings. It grows on trees, where we also rarely look for mushrooms, staring mainly at the ground. It looks a bit like a natural growth on a tree.

This mushroom can reach up to 6-7 cm in diameter. It usually has a circular shape, sometimes semicircular, bulbous.

The young fruit body is brown in color, darkens and becomes black with age. The surface of the mushroom is matte, smooth.

The interior of this mushroom is characteristic. Because after cross-section, you can see distinct layers of different colors, brown and black.

This species appears in early summer, in European conditions it is usually June, and it grows until November.

Prefers deciduous trees, not necessarily dead. It can be found in parks and gardens. It usually grows in clusters and groups. It is an inedible mushroom.

Enjoy 😉
