Autumn edible mushroom - Lyophyllum loricatum

By madventure | Nature, Photography | 8 Mar 2024

This autumn mushroom with gills can reach up to 20 cm in diameter. It is an edible mushroom, but not recognized by connoisseurs because of its tart taste.

The color of the cap is most often gray, olive-gray and hygrophanous, that is, it changes color under the influence of water.

The young mushroom has a semicircular shape, which over time becomes flat, corrugated, spread out. Occasionally, an indistinct hump is visible on the lighter-colored tip. The crust on the hat is very hard.

The cream-colored stem can be up to 10 cm tall, cylindrical and distinctly bulbous at the base. It turns gray with age. Mushrooms are often overgrown with legs. It's full inside.

Gills are dense yellowish, beige quite dense. The flesh is very hard but flexible. It has a pleasant smell and a sweetish-sour taste.

The mushroom is quite popular. It appears already in late summer and grows in late autumn. It grows in groups, bundles in deciduous forests, meadows, sometimes in parks and gardens.
