Mushrooms occurring in Europe - Gloeophyllum odoratum

Gloeophyllum odoratum - Mushroom perennial, adorned sideways. In the shape of a cushion, slightly flattened, console-like to the lumpy, spread out bent, often irregular, 50 to 200 mm in diameter. Adjacent specimens, sometimes fused together, create irregular shelves. The surface in the older part of the color is black-brown, gray-brown, grey-colored, near the shore with a lighter zone of golden, yellow-brown, cinnamon-orange to cinnamon-brown color. Very uneven, hilly rugged, initially slightly velvety, with age naked, sometimes with a deep concentrically running furrow at the base of the fruiting body. The shore is usually thickened, dull, rounded 5 to 10 mm thick, in young specimens it is ignored on the width of 4 to 8 mm.

Monolayer tubes, sometimes in old specimens indistinctly laminated. Lengths 5 to 15 mm at the base of the hat, 2 to 3 mm in the middle, on the edge about 1 mm. The color is rust-brown to cinnamon-brown with a whitish coating inside.

Circular or elongated, angular pores, in older sporocarps can be labyrinthine, small to large, 0.4 to 0.6 mm, sometimes up to 3 mm. Initially yellowish, yellow-cinnamon, with age darkening, under the influence of pressure changing the color to cinnamon-brown.

Yellow-brown pulp to cinnamon-brown, under the influence of alkali solutions, dyed black-brown. Initially, soft-corky, later hard, cork-woody, homogeneous, with no clearly differentiated skin, only in older specimens there is some surface hardening. The smell of nice aniseed or fennel. The taste of fresh tartar, sporocarp, slightly bitter aromas. At the base of the hat, 20 to 35 mm thick, in the middle part 10 to 20 mm, and on the edge 1 to 2 mm.

Occurrence: On old spruce stumps, less often pine, fir or larch, frequent. Throughout the year.

Value: Unaffected fungus.
