Why GitHub Is Burying Bitcoin's Code Inside an Arctic Mountain?

By heisenberg199 | zas | 2 Apr 2020

Github is burying Bitcoin's code in Svalbard (Norway). Bitcoin isn't the only thing that GitHub is burying. There is more:

  • .NET Core
  • Rails
  • Ruby
  • Linux
  • Go
  • Php
  • Python
  • Openssl
  • Angular
  • Node
  • Wordpress
  • JQuery
  • and many more like these

Well, why did GitHub start this project called Github Archive Program?

As many of you know, recently in 2008 in Svalbard, a secure seed bank Svalbard Global Seed Vault was established. In last enumeration (In 2018), they enumerate 983,524 different samples in total 4.5 million seeds. The main reason of this project is to have a trump card against an possible apocalypse.

Svalbard Global Seed Vault

The answer of "Why did GitHub start this project?" is the same answer as "Why Svalbard Global Seed Vault was established?".

To have a trump card against an possible acocalypse, to save open source for next generations.

How does it work? How it will last for 1000 years?

GitHub is co-operating with AWA which is a preservation provider. They are preparing film reels which will be restored in steel-walled containers inside sealed chambers so in any case of Svalbard is affected by climate change, film reels will be still protected.

They might have your repository too!

Yes, it's true. Any commits between the 13/11/2019(DD/MM/YYYY) and 02/02/2020, every repo at least 1 star any any commits between 02/03/2019 and 02/02/2020, and every repo with at least 250 stars will be buryed too.
