Medicine in Mexico

๐Ÿ’Š Medicine in Mexico - my experience

By MoreHD | My experience | 25 Oct 2025

I have been living in Mexico for about 15 years. I will share my experience about local medicine. The first thing I want to say is that medicine in Mexico is accessible to all segments of the population and at any time of the day.

Even if a person is poor, there are special centers here (if I am not mistaken, they are called DIF), where you can come for a fee of 5 pesos to consult a doctor. Near these centers there is a mobile dental machine in the morning (whether it is paid, I do not know, but if it is paid, then as I understand it, the payment is purely symbolic).

At each pharmacy there is a doctor who provides a consultation for 2-3 dollars.

Anyone who works in the ISSSTE system or a similar one, he and his family have social health insurance, which covers examination and treatment in medical institutions belonging to this system.

If there is an urgent problem that requires a doctor's examination, you go to Urgencia. And there you will be provided with emergency medical care.

I would like to note that when you are in the hospital, for security reasons, visitors may be allowed to visit you only if they have documents. And usually, this is only one visitor per visit. And if I am not mistaken, you can visit the patient only during certain hours, after passing through the security guards.

There are also private clinics and private doctors here, who often accept patients directly at their homes. But consultations with such doctors are much more expensive. And the quality of treatment in a public hospital, in my opinion, is quite high. Therefore, I see no need to overpay in a private clinic.

I would also like to highlight the delicate attitude of medical workers. All the doctors I had to deal with in Mexico behaved tactfully. If a doctor has to touch a patient close to an intimate place, he or she will warn you about it and explain why. If it may be painful, the doctor will warn you what to expect. If you have any doubts or additional questions, the doctor will be happy to listen to you and answer.

Here is my personal experience regarding treatment in Mexico:

1. Medicine here is available to both the poor and the rich;

2. Medicine is available here 24/7;

3. The quality of medical services is high;

4. Doctors adhere to medical ethics and delicacy when communicating with the patient.

Of course, your experience may differ from mine, and your impression of Mexican medicine may be different. I hope my experience will be interesting or useful for someone.
