I am semi retired and you get all these financial advisors telling you what they think you should invest your money in and charging a fortune to do so.
Although they do possess a certain amount of expertise and can invest your money in funds with different levels of risk they are not mind readers. They dont know what direction markets are going to go in for the medium to long term.
So what do you do?
At present markets are at record highs and some shares are soaring. So if that continued then a medium to high risk share portfolio might be worthwhile. Personally i worry about my pension pot and have invested in a 6 year fixed term annuity where the income is fixed but also the remaining funds figure at end of period is guaranteed (I am assuming the big name provider will survive any downturn). I dont know enough about real estate and I dont have large enough savings to invest in houses even if I wanted to.
As for savings i have a small portion in crypto and a small amount in gold or silver which should go parabolic if a recession does hit. The rest is in small amounts in a few different banks so I can withdraw ftom each if there were any problems.
I hope there is no imminent crash but we have had greater than 10 years continual growth (the longest period ever) and markets go in cycles. I feel the Fed and other central banks are artificially propping up the monetary systems and at dome stage it will all come tumbling down. (Look at the huge somes China pumped into their economy to minimise the effect of coronavirus).
Anyhow I think trusting solely on Banks is a really bad idea so having a little crypto, gold and silver is no bad thing. If you have enough to buy real estate that might be another option but who is going to buy property i a recession unless they are getting it at a knock down price.
