This week’s battle mage secrets focuses on the Keep Your Distance Ruleset.

The Keep Your Distance rulesets prevent melee monsters from being selected and therefore forcing players to rely on range and magic monsters. Off the bat, the first challenge is to choose a suitable tank. Tanks like Pelacor Conjurer, Baakjira and Riftwing are popular choices as they can absorb magic and range damage due to their abilities. The next step is to select abilities to give you an edge and I have found Scattershot to be really good in this ruleset. Scattershot can bypass front-line tanks by targeting enemy units potentially hitting support units positioned at the back. Finally, it is choosing summoners strategically that will either buff or debuff magic and range damage.

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

Coming up against an opponent with four monsters of 10+ health and a high-speed Djinn Oshannus will always be a daunting endeavour to face. Nonetheless, if there ever was a ruleset for me to play my favorite splinterlands card (Lord Arianthus), then Keep Your Distance is that ruleset. And oh boy did he deliver by leading the line and bodying all damage. However, the true heroes of the battle were Ruler of the Seas and Axemaster who capitalized on the Blast damage so well and obliterated the opposition's backline.

Do You Like the Keep Your Distance Ruleset? Why or Why Not?

Removing the melee monsters from being selected is jarring – all those team compositions and strategies that you usually default to are no longer available to you. And that is where the challenge lies – finding monsters that can play those usual melee archetype roles such as tank, DPS and support damage from the backline. But that is where lies the challenge of finding strategic solutions to the problems within the limitations of your collection.
