Sometimes it happens, even it's not my case. Still not. The main reason a MEI (individual micro-enterprise) upgrades to ME (micro-enterprise), are mostly these two:
-the individual micro-entrepreneur becomes a professional whose activity does not fall any more, in terms of law, into the allowed MEI activities. For ex., the micro-entrepreneur becomes an architect and he/she wants to pursue an architect career (be careful: if the architect doesn't want to pursue the new activity granted by his/her new degree, he/she is free to carry on its MEI and go on with the old activities)
-the individual micro-entrepreneur begins to earn above 80 thousand reais per year (ok, this is terribly difficult during coronavirus times, maybe quite impossible, I understand) or other amount decided by the federal government (yearly basis, used to increase as time pass by)
A tip: I find the second option the best, talking about upgrade, because it means the entrepreneur's activity is flourishing. So more bureaucracy and taxes are justified. But be careful about the first option: it's not always safe to pursue the new professional activity if a ME doesn't have a sufficient number of reliable and paying customers. Even if a ME has ZERO CUSTOMERS, the entrepreneur is compelled to pay taxes and to fulfill a heavier beureaucracy. And ME, in contrast to MEI, can't count on free accountant government services: a ME usually needs to pay accountant services. Ok, a ME it's still a micro-enterprise, not a medium or big company, so its expenses are still not that nightmare. But until there is not a real need or a real convenience, keep on with MEI.

A veces acontece, aunque no es mi circunstancia. Las principales razones de un upgrade de MEI (micro-empresa individual) a ME (micro-empresa) son las siguientes:
-el micro-emprendedor individual se convierte en un profesional cuya actividad no se encaja entre las permitidas a una MEI en términos de las leyes. Por ej., el micro-emprendedor individual se convierte en arquitecto y quiere alcanzar objetivos disfrutando de su nueva titulación (atención: si el arquitecto no quiere ejercer su profesión, queda libre de seguir adelante con su MEI)
-el micro-emprendedor individual empieza a ganar por encima de 80 mil reais al año (de acuerdo, lograr ese monto queda casi imposible, lo entiendo, durante estos tiempos de coronavirus) u otro monto cada año fijado por el gobierno federal (el monto suele incrementar a cada año que pasa)
Un consejo: para que haya upgrade, encuentro mejor la segunda opción, porque eso significa que el negocio está prosperando. Entonces, más burocracia y más impuestos se justifican. Pero, cuidado con la primera: si el micro-emprendedor no tiene suficientes clientes, y que sean confiables y le paguen sus servicios, no es prudente involucrarse en una nueva actividad a ciegas, a pesar de titulaciones. A pesar de no tener ni un cliente que pague por los servicios, las ME tienen que pagar impuestos y cumplir con toda la burocracia, que suele ser más compleja que la que se refiere a las MEI. Además, el micro-empreendedor no cuenta con los servicios gratis de contadores del gobierno, garantizados al micro-emprendedor individual. Generalmente, tiene que pagar por los servicios de un contador privado. De acuerdo, una ME no es una empresa de medio ni de grande porte, es una micro-empresa y por lo tanto sus gastos no suelen ser una pesadilla. Pero, hasta que no sea estrictamente necesario o conveniente, más vale quedarnos con nuestras MEI.
