Crypto Just Crashed the American Mainstream

Bitcoin hits the drive-thru next week. Steak ‘n Shake will accept it nationwide starting May 16 - no pilot, no test-run, just over 100 million customers suddenly offered the option to pay for milkshakes with sound money. It's a bold move in a fast food industry known for razor-thin margins, and a stress test for Bitcoin’s real-world usability.

While giants like Starbucks, Chipotle, and Subway flirted with crypto payments via third-party apps and select locations, Steak ‘n Shake is going all in - publicly, loudly, and unapologetically. A tweet teased it. A Jack Dorsey reply ignited it. And now the register is ready.

At the same time, Washington flinched. The GENIUS Act, a bill meant to standardize stablecoin regulation and lock in U.S. leadership in digital finance, was stonewalled in the Senate. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called it “a missed chance to lead.” Others say crypto got caught in the crossfire of Trump endorsements and unfinished text. Either way, lawmakers blinked - while the private sector built.

This week’s message is clear: Bitcoin isn’t waiting. It’s serving customers. Meanwhile, the U.S. government is still deciding what to do with the menu.
