In a recent announcement, cryptocurrency exchange Bybit confirmed that it has fallen victim to a hacking attack resulting in the loss of over $1 billion in Ethereum (ETH). The breach has raised significant concerns in the crypto community, but Bybit assured that users’ funds remain secure and that the exchange’s operations have not been affected.
The Incident
Bybit's CEO, Ben Zhou, shared the details of the breach on X (formerly Twitter). He explained that the exchange’s multisig cold wallet for ETH had made a transfer to a warm wallet about an hour before the hack was detected. Zhou reported that this transaction appeared to have been “musked,” a term used to describe a deceptive user interface designed to trick signatories into approving malicious actions.
According to Zhou, the hacker managed to take control of the cold wallet by modifying the logic of its smart contract. This allowed the attacker to redirect the funds from the cold wallet to an unknown address. However, Zhou reassured users that other cold wallets were not affected, and withdrawals remained unaffected.
The hacker swiftly dispersed the stolen funds to multiple wallets, starting with three separate distribution addresses. These were further subdivided, and the hacker began executing trades on decentralized exchanges (DEX). As of the latest update, one of the hacker’s wallets contained approximately $3.7 million in crypto.
Users’ Funds Are Safe
Despite the massive loss of ETH, Bybit emphasized that users’ funds were not at risk. The exchange stated that all customer assets are fully supported on a 1:1 basis and that it would cover any losses. Additionally, Bybit assured that all withdrawals would continue to be processed smoothly.
“If these funds are not recovered, all customer assets are fully backed, and we can cover the loss,” Zhou said. “All withdrawals will be processed without issue.”
He further clarified that any delays in withdrawal processing were due to the high volume of transactions caused by panic among users. Zhou reassured users that the exchange had the necessary funds to cover all withdrawal requests.
Impact on the Market
The news of the hack had an immediate impact on the market, causing significant volatility. Bitcoin, which had been on the verge of pushing toward the $100,000 mark, took a sharp dip, dropping back to around $98,000. Ethereum also experienced a similar decline, falling from $2,900 to $2,700 in a short span.
According to BitMEX Research, approximately 75% of the ETH deposits held by Bybit users were affected by the hack.
Bybit’s Response and Future Plans
In a live session addressing the breach, CEO Ben Zhou provided further updates and answered questions from the community. He stated that Bybit would not repurchase ETH from the open market to avoid adding to price volatility. Instead, the exchange would secure a loan from a bridge partner to mitigate the damage without impacting the market.
Zhou also reiterated an important reminder for all cryptocurrency users: "Your funds are 100% safe ONLY in your own wallet."
